Has This Old House been lurking here?
Comments (6)You're right! They're copying US! The difference I see in their pics is that WE are so excited to show off our latest projects we don't wait until all the plants are at their peak to take our pics and share. I liked the metal oil can birdhouse, but I tend to think it's more decorative vs. one birds would actually bed down in. Thanks for sharing the site. I like that people here show their projects "bare" because it gives us all a better idea of how to "borrow" ideas and make our own...But we all should remember to show our projects again later on in the year when they're all full of blooming things so we see both the early pics and the peak garden pics!...See MoreWho has been eating my new growth?
Comments (10)I've had some problems with 'hoppers and katydids this year. But also a bunch of beautiful giant swallowtail butterflies have seen fit this season to lay HUNDREDS of eggs on the new growth of my trees. Everyday after work, I make the rounds and end up squishing between 1 and 2 dozen eggs. I love the butterflies, but those little birdpoop looking little buggers will munch and munch, and get bigger and bigger until they devour whole leaves, minus the spine, in fortyfive minutes! Befor you call me a truly heartless SOB, consider that I did allow ONE to help itself to Scott's All-You-Can-Eat Thornless Keylime Buffet. I wanted to show the kids the circle of life thing, you know. Not the little orange circles I'd been squishing, but you get the point. That birdpoop looking uglybug would munch and poop all night and then hug a tree branch during the day, incognito. It finally decided to settle down and make its cocoon on the tree. Soon after it gently flies away, it will start laying eggs on my citrus trees, and the circle of death (i mean life!) shall continue. Good luck......Scott the anti-catipillar...See MoreGrowth of Trumpet Lily from seed has stalled - PICS
Comments (4)You can feed them with a little dilute general purpose fertiliser to speed up growth (try half-strength and twice as long between applications as recommended), but I'd expect to see more leaves after about 4/6 weeks. Give them as much light as you can without baking them. Extremes of temperature and over-watering/drought are what you need to avoid most, since you need to keep them growing for as long as possible. Next time try to use larger pots or even a styrofoam box, to increase the soil volume and make it easier to keep soil conditions stable. Your potting mix looks as if it will drain well, though vermiculite does tend to disintegrate faster than something like perlite over time - aim to keep it moist but not wet if that makes any sense. At the end of the season I'd pot them up to something larger (deeper). Keeping them in shallow pots will run the risk that the bulbs pull themselves down into the bottom of the pot which is usually a little wetter (perched water table) and runs the risk of basal rot appearing. Good Luck...See MoreIt has been raining here for days!!!
Comments (8)Thanks Vladimir and Evan! I did not know that about the rain. I just went out to add the lime to the three in the 5-1-1 mix and did notice that they do actually seem happy. I notice growth in just a couple of days. My navel orange is dropping most of her flowers though. I don't think it's because of the rain though. The tree is way too small to support fruit....See Morezkathy z7a NC
