Pantry shelving space advice needed please

I'm trying to design the shelves inside the pantry. This is the plan I came up with container store. The middle shelf is where I'm hoping to store the cake mixer, blender etc. The bottom shelf I'll probably use to cereal, potato, onions etc. The bottom 2 shelves are 16" deep and the top most is 12" deep. I'm hoping to store paper towel, oil and vinegar gallons etc so the bottom shelf is 18" above the floor.

Is there anything I should change? What do you think?

Your closet is only 69" tall?

You want heavy thing (like your liquid gallons) near the floor, and light items (paper towels, cereal) up high. Stuff used the most should be at waist level, easiest to reach.

Will there be adjustable shelves between these fixed shelves? What do you have that's 24" tall? Ideally, you want the shelves just a little higher than the things stored on them, so you maximize storage space without having to stack things like boxes and cans.

16" depth is great for large things, and 12" is good for smaller things. You don't want things to get hidden in the back.

It sounds like you have already thought about what you want to keep in the pantry; the more detailed you can be about what will go where, the better your design will be. If possible, make your shelves adjustable, in case your actual arrangement isn't as planned, or your needs change in the future.

Why fixed shelves? Adjustable are so much more adaptable! The next owners may want to store something totally different in your pantry. ALL the shelves (except bottom) should be adjustable.

Given the limited amount of space you have, I think you've come up with a pretty good design. The main issue I have is that, in sketching your design I think you have underestimated how much space you need in the powder room and I don't think you have taken wall thicknesses into account quite correctly. It looks like you scaled your drawing to one square = 6". thus the walls around your powder room are only drawn about 2.5 to 3 inches thick. With 2x4 framing, walls are slightly over 4" thick once you get them sheetrocked on both sides. Then, you've sketched the toilet as being only about 16 inches from front to back. Round front toilets actually jut about 25 to 28 inches out from the wall and elongated ones jut as much as 32 inches out. Then, most codes require at least 21 inches of standing space in front of the toilet. Even a small, wall mounted sink will generally stick out 16" to 18" from the wall. So, with a toilet and sink across from each other, you'll probably need 5.5 ft (66 inches) from wall to wall in the bathroom. You might be able to squeeze the size down a few inches by using a small corner sink like the ones in the link below but I wouldn't try to make the powder room's interior dimensions less than 32" x 60" An exterior door is usually 36" wide (although it is possible to purchase 32" wide exterior doors) and it needs a couple of extra inches on each side for trim and hardware. You haven't taken that space requirement into account. All this means that, in order to fit into the space you have, your cubbies, cupboards, and bench are all going to have to shrink down a little bit. Those things are more flexible tho and frankly, I don't see any better options for using the space than the one you've come up with. Good luck! Here is a link that might be useful: small sinks

After hearing so many of your suggestions, I now know that my concerns about the dreaded wall in my living room were legitimate. I really appreciate all the comments, ideas and helpful suggestions. This site is like having your own private staff of decorators at your disposal. Parma is right, the space was supposed to be for a fireplace, but we decided that we wanted the fireplace in the family room in the basement. Couldn't afford both. Probably was a mistake. I read your suggestions and looked again at my pictures and could see exactly what each of you meant. Things I had never noticed before. 1. The backs of the shelves do need color to make the display pop. Right now everything just fades into the background. 2. There's no cohesiveness to what's on the shelves and there is way too many things. 3. I have already taken down the two small prints on the sides of the mirror. What was I thinking? 4. The jobots are too long. I had never noticed that. Do they need to go to bottom of the window trim? 5. The mirror does not do justice to the space. It may be too small, wrong shape, something's not right. First of all, I really want the upper ledge gone. The problem is talking my DH into letting me find someone to close it in. I love the idea of finishing out the shelves as a bookcase. I think that would look wonderful. Do you think old books would look better in the space rather than newer books? I am a book collector and have many shelves full of novels in various areas of the house. Les917: I really like your idea of the Sunburst Pediment and would like to find a way to incorporate it into the redesign of the space. Hi again. I just answered your pull thread. :) I have a corner pantry also, but it's not quite square for some reason. It's 17" deep on the left of the door and 22" deep on the right. The back walls are 38" on the left and 47.5" on the right. Conventional wisdom around here is that shelves should be about 12-18" deep or so. Shallow enough so items don't get lost in the back recesses. I was in a hurry to get some shelves up in the small handfull of days I had between moving back in and hosting a family Thanksgiving. That, and money issues, dictated a lower budget project than I had originally hoped. My finish carpenter bought the pre-made melamine shelves and adjustable metal standards at HD and put this together in about a day. He did miter and glue the shelves in the corner for extra stability. My shelves are 12" deep and vary by height from 5.5" up to about 12". I was trying to squeeze every single centimeter out of that pantry as my ceilings are only 91" tall. I had fewer shelves to start with, but saw so much wasted air space between shelves that I asked for a few more. I worked out the storage so that every shelf fits what it needs to store. The 5.5" high shelf stores breakfast cereal sans boxes, loaves of bread, and homemade canned fruits, jams, and the like. (Excuse the mess. DH had just gone in and "made more space in there" by shoving my neatly arranged goods together to make room for all the holiday junk/food gifts. Grrrr.) I've never had a pantry before. I'm sooo lovin' this one! I walk in, turn on the light (put one in yours), and see all my larder goods happily looking at me waiting to be plucked!

I really don't keep much food around so 2 shelves should do me. the lower deeper shelves will be used for water jugs, large coke bottles and dog food bin... be sure to post pics of your pantry when you are done - and post to one of the old pantry threads adding the link to your new pantry thread. will be waiting to see it - I think the horseshoe way is the best if your have the room.

All these shelves are adjustable. You can bring them up or down as you like. I don't have anything that's 2' high. What would you suggest the height be between shelves?

i thought oil gallons should be on the floor due to the weight.

My pantry dimensions & spacing (it's a corner pantry on the periphery of my Kitchen):

The microwave labeled on the left never happened, when I tried to put it in, I couldn't open it fully. I wish I had tried earlier - I would have reduced the depth of the shelves on the left to 12" instead of 15".

Note that the 19.5" height probably could have been less -- I don't think I use more than about 12" or so of the height.

BTW...all my small appliances fit on the 12" deep shelves.

Thank you for the links. This is what I came up with. I can change the left and the right individually, so I might increase the space to hold the large tall cereal boxes. The top cabinet is not fixed yet.
