Prickly Pear Cactus help

taybagley09

I just went outside to see that my prickly pear has this large brown spot on the base of one of the plants. Does anyone know what this is? Is it a disease or is it rotting? I water it once every week or two. Just when the soil is dry. What should I do about it? I was thinking of cutting all the pads off and just starting over by growing them but I really wanted to save it the way it is. But if this is a problem that will spread throughout the whole plant if I don't do something about it, then I'll do whatever I can to make sure my plant survives.
