Studio MB...don't mean to hijack this thread, however we are about to replace our current curved island countertop and looking to both extend our current kitchen island and change the shape to rectangular. The current base of the island (without the countertop) is 3 x 5'6" and we would like to extend it to 4.5 x 7.25 with posts at either end. The inside opening will be 63" with a clearance of 19" for seating. The reason for the weird/odd extension is that we would like to make the island as big as possible and still have the recommended clearance in the kitchen for prep and etc. I would post picture of our current area, however unable to do so. Thank you for the responses. I guess a little more context would have been helpful! Let me see if I can fill in some of the gaps. Here is a layout of the dining and kitchen areas. It's not exact since this was the architect layout initially and we have made some changes on the fly during the construction - it's very close. The island is big and was how we wanted it. We have 5 kids. This tends to be our gathering place and with everyone wanting a hand in cooking, it just fit - and we have no regrets. Same for the ceiling height. That was also our choice and what we wanted to do - as the construction is going along...we absolutely love it! Definitely no lack of choices...it's just about finding something that really speaks to us. Less worried about price point than finding something that we love - although our budget is not unlimited. We selected this for above the dining table: Hubbardton Forge Etch We are considering this for the island Modern Forms Cosmic The lighting store suggested this above the island. A lot of recessed lights, accent lights, and ceiling fans. If you have any suggestions on foyer lighting, I would appreciate it as well. We don't want the traditional look of a large chandelier and similar to the island...looked at so many things that just didn't get us to where we wanted to go...and now just considering recessed lights. I don't think an island would work... It's not only the space but also layout. Maybe a large table so you have space to work. LMK what you end up doing and good luck!!!

Hi Kendrah, Thanks! I want something a little less “diner-esque.” It feels either that or clinical, especially in addition to the amount of stainless already in the kitchen. I do plan/hope to redo the kitchen but instead of a full remodel, I think I’ll be more likely to piecemeal it for now by changing the vent and cooktop, the undermount sink and maybe the backsplash for now. It’s the most poorly done tile backsplash I’ve ever seen and it goes to the ceiling. 🤦🏻‍♀️ In 5-7 years when I feel justified in changing all of the floors (the house is only two years old so I feel wasteful doing if right now), I may do a full remodel with new cabinetry and new countertops, but hope to reuse the cooktop and range come that time. I do plan to get new counter seating. I don’t like these much either but I bought them off of the first owner for a bargain because i didn’t feel like spending money on new counter stools (and six of them with spare for one more!!) until I knew what look/feel I’d be going for in the kitchen.
