Opinions wanted - Health check on this Haworthia
Comments (9)Hi Stark, and welcome to the forum. You have a tough little plant in that haworthia, and I wouldn't worry too much about the brown tips. I would recommend that you repot it and your other plants into a much faster draining potting medium. I can see from the pic that the plant is potted in peat. This is why the pot feels so light when you pick it up. What happens with peat is that when it dries out, it becomes hydrophobic. That means that it shrinks into a tight little ball and doesn't let any water penetrate through. This is especially a problem if the peat is supporting a plant. Get a mixture of some grit (smaller sized gravel), perlite and some cactus soil and mix at a ratio of 40% grit and perlite and 10% soil. Plant each of your new guys in this mixture and do not water for 5-7 days. After that, water until you see water coming out of the drainage holes, then stop and empty the drip trays. Don't water again until the soil is dry. No need to invest in a probe when a pencil/chop stick/skewer will do. Treat the soil like a batch of brownies: put the stick in and if it comes out clean, water. If not, don't. Once winter hits (@ November), I would not water the cactus at all. It can take it. The haw and echeveria should continue to be watered, but less frequently...maybe once or twice a month at most. Come spring, say @ April, begin watering again following the "wait til dry" routine. I think that the cactus and echeveria are fine with the full sun treatment, but maybe move the haw so that the sun isn't hitting it full on. Hopefully, others will chime in as well. Good luck! Comments (26)mitchdesj - I completely agree with you about logging the food and exercise. It is amazing how quickly it adds up. My app sounds much like yours. It tallies up how much you've consumed and how much you have left for the day - which of course increases if you exercise. I have my daily allowance set for 1/2 lb weight loss per week. I feel like I can't hardly eat anything unless I exercise. So it's very motivational in terms of exercising. Because if I've hit my calorie limit for the day I just stop consuming - that's it - unless I exercise and increase the number of calories I can have. I kind of have these dates/events in mind that keep me going. Like I want to look good for something happening Feb 4 - so just keep going until then. And then I have something in April - when I'll be done wearing winter clothes - want to be looking good then. And so on. I even have something in August that I was thinking if I really stick with this I could be in great shape by then. I've now passed my 5 lb weight loss goal to get off what crept on toward the end of 2011. Haven't been this low since September. I want to lose 2.4 more lbs and then I'm done and I'll be able to eat a few hundred more calories per day which will be nice. Then I just want to focus on continued healthy eating, exercise, getting in better shape, more muscle, etc....See MoreHealth check-in: Week 5
Comments (23)I have now hit my goal weight. Started my serious weight loss plan on Jan 2 and hit my goal on Feb 7 so about 5 weeks. I waited another day to declare victory to be sure it wasn't a temporary fluke. I only had 7.6 lbs to lose but I haven't weighed this little in maybe 5 years. Gradually kept creeping up but reaching the 7 lbs over mark during the holidays really hit home with me and that's when I got serious about getting back on track. I did what I did when I initially dropped about 12 lbs in the past. More disciplined, healthy eating and more frequent exercise. I'd just gradually started eating more junky food and exercising a little less and of course the pounds crept back on. Now I'm focusing on continued regular exercise, building and maintaining muscle and healthy eating. I had my tracker set for 1/2 lb weight loss per week and it's very nice to get a couple hundred more calories to work with each day. Some things I observed over the past month that I have to continue to do: stay conscious of the quantity of stuff I eat - portion control and snack quantity control - no mindless eating forbidden treats - not a problem in SMALL quantities - eat slowly, savor, and linger over each delicious bite...See MoreWeek 12 Health Check-in
Comments (13)I haven't posted to this series of threads, but felt I have to. Kelly, you are doing great! I'm 62 years old and before Christmas I told hubs, again, that I wanted a bike. This time he listened and I got a yellow bike as my gift. Got him one too (birthday a 10 days after Christmas). Our doctor said I wouldn't lose weight because my intense exercise would create so much muscle. We have been biking on the beach (hard beach here in FL). Every other day, starting with 3 mi. and now up to 5.5 miles per day. Well, last night I put on three swimsuits I purchased 4 years ago and never wore. The only comment hubs made was that no one would guess my age! Guess I'll start wearing them while I bike. Nope, haven't lost weight, but at this age, it's hard to do. Cholesterol went down 50 points, legs look great, heart rate has gone down. That how I measure health at this point in life. Consistency is the key to changing health, and Kelly my hat's off to you! Waiting to lose weight after menopause makes the problem substantially harder!...See MoreKara 9b SF Bay Area CA
