And for winemaking and grape growing, the winepress forum is the place to be!! Most there have vineyards and we all discuss everything from growing to making wine. What variety of grape do you have? Do you have room for more vines? It takes a lot of grapes to make wine!! The coast is good for growing grapes. Nebbiolo would be a good one for you. It's name in Italian means "little fog." And you certainly have THAT!! I can only grow heat loving vines, so mine are all like that. We get no cool nights here in the desert, but there ARE vines that love my climate, and many that love yours. Do some research and find them! Are your grapes white or red? Seedless or Seeded? Are you sure what they are? Are you sure you want to cultivate them? Could they be porcelain berry? They are invasive here, and they are absolutely taking over our forest, along with the kudzu, honeysuckle, and wild roses. If you aren't sure, try taking some good pics and post them over at the "Name That Plant" forum (or do an Image search on Yahoo). If you DO know what they are, maybe try the "Fruits" forum for cultivation advice. BlueBars

Grape leaves are a favorite food of several insects, not the least among them Japamese Beetles. Unless wholesale defoliation is going on, you might be wasting time and money to spray, especially at this time of year. So far as the variety, if you have grapes left at this point without spraying, they could very well be Concords. These require about the least amount of care here in the East. Concerning the pruning, that would take more time than I have. Contact your county extension agent (listed under USDA, Cooperative and Extension Service in the phone book). They might even be able to visit your place if it is on their route to somewhere. Often times they are too busy to visit a person with a few trees and a couple of grapes, but if you aren't in a hurry, they may be out. Since grapes are best pruned in the late winter, you have planty of time.

We had a wild grape growing for so long that it's stem was like a small tree trunk. We had good luck with cutting back all the green growth late in the summer/ early fall and painting the stump with Roundup. For stump painting, you need to use the concentrated stuff and dilute it 50/50 with water. There are package instructions for stump painting. My parents had one that they successfully did away with by using a winch to pull up all the stumps. In our case, that was not possible because the grape was growing into our neighbor's fence and large maple tree. Roundup has low toxicity after application, but will kill any plant (including grass) it splashes on, so use due care when handling it.
