How Should Colums and Railings be Attached to Brick Stoop

I have a brick stoop with a landing and would like to know the best way to anchor the roof support columns and handrail to the brick for a porch addition . The columns are 8 " permacast type and the handrail would either be aluminum or wrought iron. The handrail goes from the house wall to the post and from the post down the steps to the brick landing.

Pictures? Round or square columns? What type of handrail?

I prefer steel anchors for the columns. Then wrap the base with trim to hide the anchors.

Metal yards, and some sheet metal shops do railings. They can either weld the entire thing up, or more commonly use a combination of 'standard' pieces with some custom pieces to make the required railing. Just as an example, the upper and lower rails come in longer lengths that are cut to size, the verticals the same way, and a quick weld top and bottom attaches each vertical. If you need a stair railing you jig up the pieces at the angle you want before welding them together.

Yes, my contractor recommended sealing, but mainly because my neighbor's tree drops fruit on it that could stain. We're trimming our side, but can't completely rid the problem. We had bluestone at our previous house that was never sealed and it always looked perfect, no problems.

Update: We painted the gutters and soffits Benjamin Moore Dragon's Breath and the columns and windows the same color, but desaturated. Changed out the lights, updated furniture, removed shutters and added horizontal fence/gate. We ripped up the hedges in our beds and planted birds of paradise, gingers, a banana tree and vincas. Over time they will fill nicely. Our beautiful oak tree's roots are right below the walkway, and we decided it wasn't wise to mess with it. The week we finished, our dream home down the block went up for sale, and we made an offer. Thankfully since we have invested so much time and love into our home (with a lot of guidance from Houzz) and it sold within 24 hours. So we passed the "finish line" for our current home, and will thankfully we able to admire her beauty when walking the neighborhood. Thanks everyone for your input, and I hope the pictures help others looking to update a side century ranch home!

Would this be sheet metal post base bolted to using expanding anchor bolt that is used in concrete ? If so, would the expanding anchor put too much stress on the brick and mortar and risk cracking it? What about boring a hole in the brick and using an epoxy with an anchor bolt?

BTW these are 8" square columns. Railing is steel or aluminum porch railing. I havePortic Concept with Stone Instead of Brick Stoop link of a pic showing the same concept of my portico, stoop, landing and railing. The stoop is not brick, but the concept is the same as my portico.

I would think something like tapcon screws should be fine - they're made for the purpose. Predrill, mount your anchor, fasten the post, trim out the post, done.

Not a good idea attaching structural posts supporting roof to brick, You dealing with uplift loads and lateral loads and depends on where your columns will be landing on your porch and in what area you must drill the holes. Keep in mind most bricks are usually hollow on landings and steps, the only solid brick used is the last brick to have finished sides, so drilling into a hollow brick will not get you far... Seen too many brick failures even with a simple railing being attached to it. Most railing installers will use core drill bits and set the railing into a thread and fill the cavity with quick set cement instead of screwing into the brick.

Keep in mind most bricks are usually hollow on landings and steps, they only place solid brick being used is on the ends to have finished side and one brick is not much of a surface to attach anything and drilling into a hollow brick will not get you far... Seen too many brick failures even with a simple railing being attached to it. Most railing installers will use core drill bits and set the railing to pass the thread and into a riser and fill the cavity with quick-set cement instead of screwing into the brick face.

3
