Help with Rose Identification

I took a cutting 20 years ago of a rose growing at Lake Quinault in Washington state.. A photo of the flowers is attached. Can someone id its variety?

Hi Mary . . . Your rose is lovely.

Can you tell us -- Does this rose bloom only for one long period in the spring? Or does it repeat later? Is it fragrant? Can you describe that fragrance?

Can you tell us a little bit about how it grows? (i.e.: "small neat bush," "big gawky climber", "Huge ol' Shrub", "manageable climber" -- etc . . . ?

I'm guessing it's blooming now. Can you give us a photo of a bud, as well as an open bloom? Can you show us a whole "leaf" with 5-7 leaflets?

And, please tell us about the canes? Smooth? Little prickles? Downright vicious? <G>

Hi and thank you for responding!

I am attaching four more photos, one of the bush itself and one of the buds, along with a photo of the flower and new leaf growth.

The rose has just little prickle and has a very, very light lemony scent.

The bush stands about four feet tall, and was planted 19 years ago, after the start rooted and could be planted out.

Sure hopes this helps and thank you for helping me puzzle this out.

Hi, There is no way to know what rose that is with only that photo. All that anyone can be pretty sure of is that it is a modern rose. Please look at the FAQ in the Name That Rose forum for information to include that helps in rose identifications. Remy

Did you save your lovely old rose from the backhoe? If it's flowering so well and is healthy why on earth destroy it? As the others say, it could easily be tidied up and pruned back into shape - easier to work with a robust rose that's obviously thriving in your climate with little care, than start again with something new that you may have to labour over...(Sorry, just my opinion).... Yes it looks as if it may be a rugosa or something with a bit of rugosa in it; I didn't know Hansa grew that big but others would know better. Does it smell sort of warm/clove-like? If it is H. you have yourself a very good rose that will be easy to care for in the future, once you've got it back under control. And there should be gorgeous big decorative hips in Autumn (Fall), from which you can make all sorts of wondrous old-time things like Rosehip Jelly and Tea. That's after you've finished bottling up the Rosepetal Jam, of course! :-D Seriously, you have to watch these men with their machines, they have to be spoken to very firmly, in my experience. I once had a neighbour who offered to come round to my place with his chainsaw and cut everything - trees, shrubs, everything - down to four foot high. He said it would look much neater. Honestly, they have no idea at all! (No offence to all the lovely sensitive blokes out there) LOL :-)

I'm looking forward to growing more and will post pictures as they mature. I am buying from different sources and rooting some I come upon. I have found Antique Rose Emporium to send lovely own root plants that are quite large and well rooted, upon planting they take off. I made a trip to Rouge Valley Roses to pick up my order and was allowed to wander through the amazing number of varieties they grow. They were very helpful and I was surprised at the maturity of the band plants, many of them boxed in bloom. The scent of their gardens is amazing. They are NOT a retail nursery and I felt fortunate to be able to pick my roses up and got five more varieties that caught my eyes and nose. I have quite a bit of shade with my mixed pine, cedar and oak forest that I am growing. Thank you for all of your suggestions.

What a beauty! I'd like to ask that you dig it up and send it to me but I don't really want to imagine the amount of laughter that would cause on your part. I hope someone here can help with the ID. I tend to think it's not an antique rose unless it were to be a tea rose, but its habit doesn't seem quite lax enough.

What ever it is, it has a lot of vigor for a HT on its own roots, doesn't it?

Does anyone here think this could possibly be 'General MacArthur'?

'General MacArthur' is described as being very fragrant, so it can't be this rose.

I thank everyone for their help. I will move my question to another of the rose forums.
