It's been a rough few weeks but I am back in the sewing room.

Some of you already know this. Three weeks ago, my grandson was born 3 weeks early. Today was his due date. He weighed 6 lbs 12 ounces and was 20 inches long. Soon after birth, he had some blood sugar issues and was taken to NICU for observation and IVs. Less than 24 hours later, he had a bloody diaper and was diagnosed with Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). He was transferred to Centennial Children's Hospital in Nashville, for their specialized NICU and went into immediate emergency surgery. The surgeon removed 60% of his small intestine. Baby James was not strong enough to recover from this awful disease. We made the decision to let him go. Baby James only lived 3 days and 3 hours.
The last thing that I was working on in the sewing room was a quilt for James. I am back in the sewing room and plan to finish that quilt and donate it to another child. I have other stuff to work on, as I know I cannot stay focused on that one quilt for any length of time. While in the NICUs, I witnessed some of the small quilts and coverlets that have been donated by other quilters. I also know that Sharon often makes and donates them. I plan to start doing that myself and I challenge all of you to do the same.

that's excellent, linda. I know you waited a long time this year. activity really is cranking up, sarah. I saw 5 different birds almost simultaneously last saturday. times 5? wow. I've been thinking about what bob sargent said here last spring. during southbound M-word, sorry, there is "literally a river of hummingbirds flowing past your home, and your feeder is sampling daily from it." he said that he has banded at homes where the residents claim to have 2 or 3 or 4 birds. he will go there and indeed band 3 or 4 birds. he goes to the same house 2 or 3 days in a row, and bands birds each day, *but not the same ones!* I keep thinking about that image of a river of hummingbirds. very poetic.

We do not know the father at all. Here is some facts i know. She got pregnant after 6 months of dating him. She is a veyr pretty girl but my Dh's friend and i were wondering if she did it on purpose to make sure the guy stays.... they married, live together for another 4 years after the child was born but out of the blue...and i do mean out of the blue, he todl her straight out that he doesn't want to live his life with her and siad he's going for a divorce. We first thought..ok...family man...doesn't want it..never aksed for it in the first place..but then we thought..mmmm.. affair??? nope..no affair just wants completely out, will pay her Cs with minimum contact, no communication whatsoever. then i meet the mother...who is very intelligent. highly educated...but i noticed she wants to party and drink and mingle. so i'm thinking,,,,,neglect. Maybe this kid just doesnt' get enough attention , get ignored and maybe she was born with some sort of psychological problems. Its rare..but it does happen. I immediately picked it up the moment she stepped into my household but didn't think she would be violent. And she realized soon i was completely onto her and she didn't like it at all. So she is very aware at her age what she is doing and she purposely takes the individual or animal, isolates it before she begins her assaults...so she KNOWS. She's 5 but she knows...I think that is evil incarnated! I've read other stories as well with kids rare, but are born this way. They have to be hospitalized immediately. I read one on another forum where the daugther was given up by the mother because she was harmful to her new baby brother...then with the father and sm...she held a pillow over her baby sister! Well they all had her committed. Turned out she was a psychopath. No emotions, no empathy, cruel, maticulus and planned. EIther way, i've told my husband i never want that girl over and told his friend that she as a mother should adress these odd behaviours before someone or thing get seriously hurt.

Normally I direct sow, but maybe starting in containers outside could work. I would have to think of a place that gets enough sun, but not so much sun or the hatched seedlings will dry out for sure. I don't leave until 2nd week of Oct and normally things I have direct sowed are popping up within that 1st week, but I am trying some new stuff I never did before and this is fall not spring so maybe fall seedlings take longer. If I get my butt in fast enough gear I could divide the packets into 3rds and do an experiment direct sow, containers and the last 3rd when we get back home. Ohh to be so organized. Damn this working for a living, it so gets in the way! Lol.

How heartbreaking. I'm so sorry for you and your family. The thing with this situation is, not only are you sorrowing for the Grandchild, you are also witnessing your child going through the loss of their child. I can only say a prayer of healing for you all.

I have your hand, Jackie. You know I have also walked a similar road. Raina will show Baby James all around heaven where there is no pain. I try to drown my grief, still, in the sewing room. So many babies (and parents) need comforting and the quilts help. Hugs to you and your family.

Did the NICU give you a size they prefer?

So sorry for your loss. My quilt guild made many NICU quilts; they liked 30" square, brightly colored.

Just finished a quilt for St. Jude's, and am working on another.

Did your grandson receive a Wee Care gown? That is another great project, from SAGA. We each make one a month.

Sharon, I do know that you have walked this same road. I remember grieving with you. I have not asked the NICU yet what size they want. I am thinking that I want to go and ask them in person. James did get a burial gown, but we did not use it as my son and daughter-in-law decided on cremation since they plan to move from the Nashville area eventually. This way, James can go with them and is not left behind with no one to visit his grave. We turned the gown back to the NICU when we picked up his memory box. My son has asked me to take James' receiving blankets and hats that he wore and make a memory quilt out of those. Thanks so much for the kind words and prayers.

Jackie, The NICU I donate to prefer 24X36 to fit on top of the incubators to help keep the bright lights off of the babies and for the backing to be a neutral calming color.
