Comments (20)Quite a nice bit on that -- hammer drill? When I first started doing gardening here, I spent $100 (with discounts and coupons) on the lowest quality Harbor Freight demolition hammer (like a mini jack hammer, but can be hand held). It acts a little funny (won't engage easily sometimes) but I've put many hours on that thing and it was WELL worth it as renting one would've been $70 for the day. It tears apart the rock-hard hard pan. My hard pan cannot be broken with a pick axe; the first time I tried was hilarious. I had padded gloves, safety gear, lifted the axe overhead and let loose a full-body powered swing onto the pan (I love to chop wood and I've broken up sidewalk with a sledge and pick, so I know how to "power chop"). Well, my attempt was less than successful as there was a loud CLANG and with it a giant spark! The smallest little dent was made the size of a dime. My boys laughed as I put the axe down and tried to get feeling back into my still vibrating hands for the next couple minutes. Felt like I was in a Looney Tune cartoon. This picture is a section that was breaking off in chunks. The piece in my hand it turned over -- the pan to the right of my hand is more typical....See MoreHow often do you just hang out in your garden?
Comments (11)I had an acre cleared for my veggie garden but made them keep a little island of natives about in the middle. They thought I was nuts- tree roots and all that interfering with veggie roots, sucking irrigation water, honeysuckle would take over, there might be more poison ivy lurking, etc. Well, that little island, with its two small maples and a tiny oak, some scrubby weedy things too, have, over 5 yrs., sprouted a lovely sassafras, a clump of maple leaf viburnum, and a hickory. The edges have been planted with hosta and ferns, those viburnums that prefer some shade, a place for a sweet autumn clematis to climb unabated, daylilies and glads that are protected from critters (because the veggie garden is fenced 8' high). I put my ancient metal A frame swing there and it is where I escape. In the winter, all bundled up with blankies, I watch the stars. In spring I watch the birds building nests above me and Blue Mason Bees running back and forth. In the summer I escape from the heat of the day, but not the humidity which is cured with a tall glass of sweet tea. In the fall I watch the leaves turn colors overhead and fall down on me willy-nilly. Now that I have inherited cat and resulting kittens, they join me there on the swing. My DH wanders out there too to rest, just to have some peace and utter quiet before he jumps back on the tractor to plow or disc. If I sit there too long I am looking for a piece of paper to write down what needs to be done in the garden. That's when I know I have tarried enough. Comments (4)I would water most everything, though perhaps not cacti. But certainly Aeoniums.. .they need a lot of water in the winters anyway, and this year they sure aren't getting it from the weather. In your climate, I doubt you kill much of anything by watering, and most plants will like it (Agaves for the most part will appreciate it). Jades certainly like water this time of year....See MoreHow often do you phone your married sons?
Comments (71)This is evidently still an interesting topic. I almost never call my DS or DIL. I told them at the beginning of their marriage that I would love to hear from them -- whenever they want to call me. (I had an intrusive MIL.) They married one another, not me. With two grammar school age kids and work, they are BUSY. I only hope they have time to talk to one another! (DIL's family is not intrusive either.) DIL never calls me, but will sometimes email me. DS will call every 4 - 6 weeks. He sometimes uses speaker phone so we can chat with the whole family. DIL and I will chat for half an hour if *I* ask to speak with her individually. DH and I love to hear from them, but we have all the time in the world. They don't. It's good to have 'ties that bind' as long as the binding isn't a stranglehold....See Moreorangelime1
