How far back can I trim my lemon
Comments (1)It may be a grafted or bud grafted tree so if you cut it down to 19 or 20 inches (.5 meter) you may cut below the graft or the bud grafts. Otherwise, they are very forgiving when pruned. Cut the limbs and shape the tree as you want it. It will put on new sprouts. Prune the new sprouts you don't want. Any sprouts which come from below the current lowest limb, I would automatically remove. They could be a sprout from the rootstock. Fertilize after pruning and you should see new sprouts within 2 or 3 weeks. Pruning may inhibit blooming for the next season but it should bloom the second season....See MoreOakleaf Hydrangeas - How much room?
Comments (9)I know this is slightly off-topic, but Molly and Houstonmellie, did you see the Kathy Huber article on hydrangeas in Saturday's Houston Chronicle. Does it bug any of you that she's written an article showing all the big, beautiful pom-pom hydrangeas and really didn't emphasize how temperamental they can be in our climate? No wonder gardening novices get discouraged when they buy the beautiful pink and blue ones at garden centers and they fry by mid-June! She cheesed me off last fall after Hurricane Ike when her 10 Best Trees for Houston listed live oak as number 1. Okay, yes, live oaks do very well in the Houston climate, but there aren't many lawns large enough in suburban Houston to accommodate them at maturity. Okay, sorry. Maybe I'm just striking out because I'd love to have beautiful hydrangeas, but don't think they're worth the risk of looking ratty or even dead by June.......See MoreWhat should my Oakleaf Hydrangeas look like by now?
Comments (7)Hi Stir_Fry I am also SE Michigan. My oakleafs are 5 years old. I think due to the cool and not terribly sunny Spring they are later in leafing out. Mine have just begun in the last couple weeks but far from being full. Last year the harsh winter prevented any blooming - none, nada. I wonder what the late frost will do for this years bloom - if yours do not bloom just blame it on the late freeze. Oakleafs are supposed to be hardy in our area but mine are still very susceptible to the late freezes. The foliage is still beautiful and I never count on having blooms. When it does, I consider it a surprise bonus....See MoreAny idea how far down to trim/cut back a Duranta?
Comments (6)I had two durantas at the entrance of my driveway at my last house. I cut all dead growth off after winter before they started setting new branches. The Mexican lady that sold them to my Dad (and he then gave them to me), said you should never top them, but instead, cut out branches from the center and up underneath to not destroy the "umbrella" growth habit. But frankly, mine always died off every winter so I cut everything brown off each year. And they came back beautifully in their normal "umbrella" shape, so cut away is my vote. :)...See MoreBunny
