Please help me finalize my Kitchen design
Comments (5)We are working with very similar issues/designs, so I feel your pain! The EIK depends...it's something I am struggling with. My realtor said I needed to keep it. But it makes my work area so small and not useful. So I am opening to the DR and having a breakfast bar. I'm hoping the open space and functional kitchen will be what people see and not the fact they can't stick a kitchen table there. Besides, the counter gives a space to eat breakfast/lunch, do homework, socialize with guests - all things a table can do. But it took me a loooooong time to decide to go this direction. I would say you need to keep seating at the bar to make up for the lost EIK. I like the KM design. I think I'd switch the fridge and the oven (do it as shown in the architect's rendition) - you aren't gong to be able to open the right fridge door all the way where it is. I'd also loose the island. You don't really have the space to support it - th aisles will be very narrow and it's so small, it's not going to be that helpful. That can save you money and you can add one at another time. There are tons of nice work table/islands you can purchase - it doesn't need to match the cabs. This was also something I struggled with b/c I felt the space was a little too open without it, but everyone here convinced me to leave it out and if I find I do want something there, go for the work table. To save money you can also do furniture/particle board cabs - most everyone here agrees it's a great way to save about 15% on cabinets! Also, GW is the land of drawers! Ditch the cabs with rollouts and go for drawers. Easier to pullout one thing than to open doors and then pull out. Though probably won't save much $$ b/c I was told cabs with rollouts are about the same cost wise as all drawer bases. The architect drawing - did he give you a price? His plan is very similar to the KM plan and you could just ask him to do furniture legs on the end for the dog bowls - every line carries something like that. He might be able to get you a better deal on another line (or he might not!) Good luck! I am at the same point as you right now so I know how frustrating it is! I go back to my KD tomorrow to make some tweaks and see if I'm ready to take the plunge!...See MorePlease help me with my cabinet struggle
Comments (9)Thanks for the opinions everyone. There are times when I just need someone else to make a decision for me, and this time it was DH. He didn't want to be responsible for yet another project on this house (putting all the cabinets together) when we have so many other things we're doing ourselves, and I know I couldn't put the cabinets together myself, so the decision was made for me. We'll be doing the custom Amish cabinets. I spent most of the weekend drafting a letter to them with all my concerns and notes and measurements and pictures and templates. I'm sure they're going to just love getting that package. I just have to sit back now and trust that they do a good job, and tell myself to be happy with whatever it is I get and stop comparing it to the look of IKEA, because there is no comparison between framed and frameless cabinets (at least in my mind). I may get some IKEA cabs down the road for our laundry room, just to show DH how nice they really are (he's never seen them) and to satisfy my IKEA buying urge, but that can wait a while. To answer some questions, it was between only those two decisions because I've priced other brand semi-custom cabinets and the prices always exceeded those of the Amish guys. The only cabinets that were cheaper were IKEA and junk, so there were really only two choices. And no, it wasn't Friese cabinets, although maybe I should check with them too. ;-) I'm sure if the IKEA was closer or the one near us was open already this decision would be harder, but since I've never assembled an IKEA cabinet and DH has never seen one, the solution to go Amish seems best, for now. Thanks again everyone!...See MorePlease help me finalize my kitchen plans! :)
Comments (24)If you don't want to change windows, I still like the layout I posted earlier. You could do deeper cabinets on either side of the fridge and maybe move the fridge a couple inches closer to the slider. In my last kitchen I had a very small island (39X42) with the fridge directly opposite the stove and the island in between. I never once considered the island a barrier (maybe because the island was small). I usually removed items from the fridge to the sink area. Moving your stove down on the wall would give you a nice prep space and more storage near the stove. I believe you have 5 feet between the edge of your island as I drew it and your dining room table. That should work in your space. Use small tuck under counter stools. If you still think the walkway would be too small, you could do a nice lighted display case facing the dining room. Or just dining room storage. A peninsula could work, but I still like the fridge across the isle. I'm not sure seating works and I moved your stove down a bit to give you more room at the sink. Baking sheets to the left of the stove and pots to the right. Access to the corner from the dining room....See MorePlease help me decide on cabinet hardware color!!
Comments (15)Actually I am so glad you mentioned color. I ordered white dove and mocha cherry. I got the samples last night. I honestly thought the white looked whiter but then I thought it was the night time lighting and didn't really think about it. When I saw you said yours was oatmeal I looked at it and saw the white dove also which is definitely creamier. Turns out the sample I got is actually essential white (WAY more white like a bright light. I thought maybe I had lost my mind but I knew I had really liked it when I was selecting!!!). Phew. So I really did order white dove, which is a bit whiter than oatmeal but definitely not a bright white. Sorry to derail this. But thank you!!!...See Morecaligirl5
