Has anyone grown a climber on a palm tree
Comments (17)Well, I planted my new roses near a palm, so I may be in trouble. OTOH, my hose is really close and I have one of those new dopey light hoses that are really easy to lug around (along with an irrigation system). I'm willing to be a rose slave for a while to see what happens. I can always transplant if need be. It IS kinda funny to read people's interpretations of appropriate landscaping. Honestly if I had my druthers I'd love to have proper English landscaping, but that won't work because we don't really have perennials, just shrubs, trees, and some bulbs. I am miffed at the lack of variety here. I have some fabulous plumeria courtesy of a wonderful plumeria expert friend, but my heart is really with roses and I hate the conventional wisdom that roses don't do well here. I've been having luck with orchids the past five years to help me cope with my rose envy. I can see I might be in for a roller coaster ride until I figure this out....See MoreHas anyone grown phlox stolonifera 'Sherwood Purple'?
Comments (2)I was hoping someone would have answered this, because I am also curious. I just planted three Phlox stolonifera 'Weesie Smith' from Plant Delights. It looks like a very rambunctious grower, even in a pot, and it had some open blooms that were very pretty. The growth seems quite tender with thinner leaves as opposed to the sturdier and more "waxy" foliage of my Phlox divaricata, which was planted last fall and is blooming now. This makes me think that P. stolonifera will want more moisture and not be as drought tolerant as P. divaricata. Hopefully others with long term experience with these two species will chime in?...See MoreHas anyone grown Agave from seed?
Comments (11)My seeds arrived! Worried me a bit getting a tracking # from Phoenix Desert Nursery, they must be affiliated with the Cactus Store. For a second there I found myself wondering if I was ordering plants in my sleep! I will start these once I get the stuff in order, at least the Agave and cacti species. The Agave seeds are much bigger than I expected, as are the Trichocereus. These will be MUCH easier to work with than those wretchedly tiny Mesembs! If anyone has advice on sowing, by all means chime in. For now, I am thinking some kind of cactus mix amended with extra pumice, with a layer of sand on top. I will probably plant in plastic baked good containers, to help with humidity early on as well as for the excuse to buy baked goods....See MoreHas anyone seen Japanese Maple Spring Delight leaves change shape?
Comments (10)I found this post while I was searching for the defintion of what exactly is considered "juvenile foliage". I'm growing a found seedling of a japanese maple and it's leaves have changed shape a bit in 2 growing seasons...so all of the "wood" is new wood. I'm trying to figure out if the leaves are still considered "juvenile" in a two year old seedling, or if it referrs to early spring growth on a mature tree? I attached a screen shot from the book "Japanese Maples, J. D. Vertrees 2nd edition" talking about "juvenile" leaves. I hope this information might be helpful or interesting to other gardeners- and also hoping someone can define "Juvenile" foliage when it comes to seedlings....See MoreKristine LeGault 8a pnw
