Phalaris arundinacea - Ribbon grass I would say.

Does not appear to have the rounded stems typical of that grass. Leaves pictured go right down to the roots.

Looks like Liriope spictata 'Silver Dragon', which is not a grass at all but a member of the iris family. It should bloom with standard liriope-purple flowers in late summer.

I do believe that is it. I thought it looked like liriope from the size and structure, but couldn't find a white-variegated version (yellow seems to be more common). Guess I didn't look hard enough. Thank you!

Agree with Liriope, which is in Asparagaceae. Strangely in my country the white-stripe are very common, but yellow one are not. in tropic they rarely blooms, although I saw few case with white/pale purple small flowers

Don't think so. No central groove, variegation and texture don't look right and leaf tips too rounded.

As for the zone, well, the plant on the OP's pic sits in a container, so the zone in this case may, or may not be relevant. In my zone 5a Chlorophytum comosum is often grown as a houseplant.

The OP says it's about 8 inches by June which sort of implies its perennial.

Anyway the other reasons I gave all point away from spider plants imo. The variegation just isn't right. For any of the permutations.

Of the ones mentioned here structurally it is the Liriope.

Could also be a Sedge (carex)? I think you'll know for sure when it blooms.

I have this same grass and I've been trying to figure out what it is for 3 years. I would just ask my MIL since she planted them, but she thinks asiatic lilies are the same as daylilies and already told me that this plant was Chlorophytum comosum, which I have several of as house plants and would not survive outside year-round in z6, let alone 5 seasons, but I digress...

This plant gets pale purple, lavender colored flowers in late summer (mid-late August here). The flowers do resemble my neighbors liriope (he has "big blue"), but it never forms the large, black berry-like clusters. Also, the variegation is much streakier and more varied than liriope "silver dragon" or "ice dance" sedge. Some leaves come up more white, others more green, but always streaky, not in clean, clear lines. I'll try to add a photo is mine if that helps.

Question,if a Phalaris was just getting started for the season wouldn't the first blades be growing out of the soil?Wouldn't it take a little while for the culm to form?

The base of each blade will be a sheathed culm. Even in seedlings

I think this grass is definitely a variety of Liriope spicata. It stays short (6"-12"), no stems ever appear other than the flowers, flowers are lavender/mauve and appear in late summer or even later, spreads rhizomatously... Maybe liriope "Silverstar".

Just to be accurate Liriope isn't a grass. It just looks like one. It's in the Asparagus family.
