Roses Unlimited Summer Sale, now through 6/14/17

I was so sure (well, who am I kidding?) that I'd be able to avert my eyes and resist, but they have a Tea on their sale list that I've had my eye on for Quite A While Now. So I ordered 4 roses; some things are limited quantities, and I didn't send my e-mail until this evening, so I don't know if I'll get what I want.

And for anyone who wants a "Jesse Hildreth", he's been renamed "Jessie", and is on the sale list. Usually they send out nice large plants, but "Jesse" seems to have been a slow starter for many of us, so I'm wondering how large RU's plants are? Maybe somebody should order one just to find out...

I am going to find out, Virginia. I sadly report that Jessie has grown beautifully here in a pot or in the ground until Spring freeze thaw hits, then has died twice. I got the first two from rosepetals. They were fine plants. When I saw this sale, I thought I have to try again. I am debating whether to just keep Jessie #3 in a pot or plant out way past the freeze thaw time in the future. Our weather this past spring has the freeze thaw happening 3 weeks longer than last spring, hence the second "mistake". I had wanted Jessie in the ground before extreme heat hit, but that turned out to be a mistake this year with the different weather. I am puzzled that I planted ARE Teas mid January 2016 and 2017 and they did fine, yet Jessie #2 could not handle planting end of 3/17. The ARE roses came defoliated and without soil and hence probably as dormant as Teas get. The Jessie #2 I planted this past spring was put in the ground completely lushly foliated and that may have been a factor. Possibly Jessie is just not hardy here, but I think my timing errors are a factor. I can keep Jessie in a pot and a protected alcove over winter and spring freeze/ thaw if need be. The optimal planting time for potted leafed out teas here might be undetermined so far.

I know you may not be on the forum for now, Virginia, but you pointed out RU renamed Jesse, Jessie. That is funny that I had started spelling Jesse wrong after I got the third plant, but never noticed that I was following RU's lead. I see you noticed that. My "Jessie" has made it so far, but I've gone back to calling him Jesse.

Hello fellow rose friends, Thank you for your recommendations. I had about 80+ roses in 2010. Unfortunately, I lost about 1/2 of them due to a winter freeze. At that time, I was overseas, and my DH did not realize that the roses needed to be sheltered. I was heartbroken. I am disabled due to fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and a myriad of health issues. Although roses do not alleviate chronic pain, they give me immense joy and peace. I know this may sound a bit strange, but roses instill hope in me to combat my health problems. charleney: I agree that shipping charges are astronomical for West Coast buyers. USPS/UPS keep raising the prices each year which negatively affects small businesses and their customers. Sigh! I live in Redmond. Puyallup is quite a distance from here. With soaring gas prices, the commute to and fro to Puyallup may even out the shipping charges (a bit of an exaggeration, but you know what I mean). Perhaps, I'll wait a bit longer for RU to drop the sale prices; although the downside of waiting is that most of prized roses are sold out and the selection is limited. Mine arrived Wednesday p.m. Unpacking was tricky given elaborate packaging and fading light, but that packaging got 4 nice-sized roses to me without any damage, so no complaints. I received 3 Teas ('Souvenir de Victor Hugo', 'Enchantress' and 'Maman Cochet'' and 1 Noisette: 'Mount Vernon Purple Noisette' AKA 'Mrs Woods Lavender-Pink Noisette'. All are good-looking plants, but I am especially captivated by 'Enchantress' with her neat habit and gorgeous foliage. I potted them up in 3-gallon pots the next morning- here's a photo of them just after that, but before some staking was added to stabilize them- 'Enchantress' really didn't need staking, but the other three were a bit wobbly in their pots... An early-morning rain was a nice welcome, and so the photo's a bit glarey- the large pot in the back has a fig tree in it (and a couple of volunteer squashlings).

The good news is that they are still shipping on July 10. May be their last shipping date until the weather cools down sometime in September. I loved Honorine and didn't have her long enough to really tell. I had Sheer Stirpes a few years and loved it. Rockin' Robin didn't really do anything for me, blooms were small. Scentimental was okay but it just wasn't hardy in my yard. I am in a microenvironlment where my weather is more like Hendersonville, NC, than Greenville, SC. I lost some through neglect (my fault). Lost at least 50 or 60 to what I thought was RRD, but was actually my mother spraying Roundup in my yard without my knowledge or permission. as for the Festival Fanfare, I am sure they are mislabeled, but have not taken the time to try to figure out what they might be. Can't complain because they were a gift.
