Rust, sunburn, or something else? Help please!
I live in ohio, zone 6. I have two sedum hybrid plants in the ground outside that I'm having a problem with. I have other ones in the same garden bed doing just fine. The area that I planted them in gets basically full sun, besides the earlier morning. I only water them when the soil becomes dry, which is about every 5 days or so. I recently moved into this house and everything was highly over grown besides the area by the house that had very poor soil. When I first moved in about 10 months ago, I had taken manure, some organic materials, and some soil and used a rottotiller mixing all that up. When planting my succulents and sedums in the garden, I was sure to mix in some fine gravel and peat moss into the area where the would be planted to help with drainage. Then I planted them with succulent and cactus soil. I have the mulch pulled away plenty from the roots of the plant. I just don't know what this could be on them. It's kinda scale like, but not the bug scale. It's kinda like a thin crispy coating, that's brownish beige and can be shiny. It not just on the top of the leaves, it's on the under side of them and the steam as well.

Comments (1)Afternoon sun is more intense than morning sun, & noon to mid-afternoon is the most intense. If they've been shaded all morning, & suddenly get that afternoon blast, they may be scorched. (Sorry I don't know a for-sure answer.) Best luck!...See MoreEnd rot, sunburn, or something else?
Comments (6)jean, you are incorrect that calcium will not help. if he added something like bone meal or an organic then yes, that prob will not help. but if he were to get calcium in liquid form and supply it when he waters then the plant will be getting the calcium needed. i forgot to add lime to my mix as i am new to mixing my own mix. so i found a way to break down the lime using vinegar and i supply a little bit when i feed the plants and well all the peppers i have so far have not had BER i had it bad with my bells last year and i have 3 peppers on it now so my fingers are crossed that i solved this particular problem. Comments (10)Yeah....canola oil will work....but tung oil is better. I know some "junkers"...people who buy stuff to garage sale out....who spray their piece with Pam. But canola and pam never really really dry....and they get dust stuck to them. Tung oil is meant to be used on furniture....and I think it has a drier in it. An alternative would be spray on lacquer....but you want to be sure you get it into all the groves or you will get rust again. An oil you brush on is best. As for the steel wool....use fine...it will scratch....but by using the fine, the scratches will be....fine!! Dip the steel wool in Brasso or BarKeepers Friend with a bit of water and scrub at those dark spots. I have a pair of mid 19th century brass push up candle sticks that were black as pitch....they had been in a fire.....they are now wonderful polished brass.
