DA’s website recommends BB for containers, but also says it can grow into a climber, go figure! I should mention I don’t spray. So disease resistance is very necessary.
Would you say the bush shape is nicer on Darcey than Munstead? I guess that is important too given that pot life makes it hard to hide bare legs, spindly form, etc.
Here is a picture of the area, I am hoping it will go behind the 2nd yellow chair. The mandevilla will hopefully bloom soon to add more color.
This seating area is opposite a bloodgood maple and hydrangea (pink) on the other side if it helps visualize the color:

Comments (32)Wow..thanks everyone for all the great suggetions. TerryJean...thanks again for all your help. That's just what I wanted to know if EG was a soft color or a harsh yellow. Pretty Jessica is lovely too, but maybe a little too short. You are right I am looking for a more "boxy" grower. Maybe I could use PJ in front of the boxwood and skip the Helen Von Steins. :-) Kate...Mystic Beauty is gorgeous...thanks for the link and your thoughtful informative response. According to the USDA I'm still a zone 5, but over the last 5 years or so I have definitely seen changes in our climate and the hardiness of my plants. For instance all of my roses (DA and even the few HT's I have) have not been covered in winter in several years and yet come back every spring, with minimal winterkill. Also many of the other perennials I grow that are listed as only zone 6 hardy come back with no problems at all. So I think Mystic Beauty is worth the shot. Princess Alexandra is *gorgeous* and definitely on the list of pink roses to consider. In fact I think it will be a tough choice between Mystic and Alexandra. Seil...Julia Child is really lovely and glad to hear both you and Diane recommend her. This will be another tough choice; Julia Child vs. Easy Going to combine with Mystic Rose or PAK. Wish i could see them all in person so I can see which yellowish rose looks good with which pink. :-) Diane...I'm really loving PAK. Glad to hear your positive comments about PAK and Julia Child. I think, since I'm at least 1 zone colder than you that maybe they will both stay a bit shorter for me here? Jon...I would never choose a rose solely on thorns vs. no thorns. :-) Just if all things are created equal except that one has no thorns and one does...I'd go with the no thorns. I'm a bit of a "jump right in" personality, so I do not go gingerly into the roses but just dive right in. Every time I clean under the roses, (I'm thinking right know of the Carefree Delights) I risk losing an eye or being impalled. P.S. May I say that I loved your quote on your "Me Page". It is definitely an attitude I strive for...always being able to see the sun. Strawberry Hill...was it you who asked? I haven't had my soil pH checked in several years, but the last time I tested, I believe my pH was 6.8 or 6.9. I'm able to grow a lot of plants that like a *slightly* acidic soil, like some rhodies, azaleas, and oaks, even blueberries seem to adjust. But truly acid loving plants like Arctostaphylos would definitely not appreciate my soil and I'm too impatient?/lazy? to bother with supplementing. :-) Thanks again everyone for all your help. Comments (52)I like the fact that they have reviews of the different varieties on their website with the reviewer's city and state. It helps to know what grew well (and tasted good) where. Also, I had wondered about the prairie dresses! I wondered if it was a religious thing. They reminded me of the dresses the women at the Warren Jeff compound wore. Interesting to know it's just a gimmick! I ordered quite a few seed packets from them this year because I had heard good things about them and liked the varieties they offered. Comments (23)Dealing in any other way than credit card, paypal and the like is prohibitively expensive unless we are talking about very large orders. To give an example, my bank is asking for a euro 50 fee for the transfer of amounts up to 500 euros or so...Three roses which is a reasonable amount will thus cost at the minimum 45+15+50 euros... I have had experience exchanging emails in english with Le Roseraie du Desert and they have been very helpful and easy to talk to (they are Americans if I understand correctly). They accept paypal I gather. I was about to order from them when I needed to be hospitalized last year. Last time I checked Bierkreek the only payment method available was bank transfer or cash which prohibited me from dealing with them. I don't know if this has changed but I doubt it. Additionally you had to email them your request, and they would come back with availability and the shipping costs quote. Not very efficient I think. I've had very bad experience with a couple of german nurseries which never responded to my emails. For one of them I left a bad review in HMF and discovered I was not the only one with such a bad experience. What I like to do is go online to an english language site, put a few roses in my shopping basket, check out, pay with my credit card both the rose price and the shipping cost, receive a confirmation email and be done with it. Anything more complicated than this is a hassle. Contact with the nursery should only be needed if one needs to clarify something or resolve a problem, not for a business as usual order. If contact is needed I expect this to be conducted promptly by email and in english, not because I happen to speak the language but because it is the de facto lingua franca for international commerce. I don't expect to have to use a translator nor jump through the machine translation hoops. So if anybody has any recommendations for such nurseries not in the UK with a good selection of OGR's and the like and which will ship across the EU, they are welcome. PS. Bierkreek seem to be preparing a proper e-commerce site. When they have it ready I will be pleased to try it. PS2. The Lens nursery was mentioned. Below the link to their terms and conditions. Comments (27)I am so glad someone brought this up. I, too, am new to growing roses this year (majority DA in my garden), and like sbrklyn, my potted, ownroot, and bareroot DA roses that get full sun started out impressively strong, loaded with gorgeous buds and blooms, but the incessant rain this summer in 6a has unleashed every plague possible on the roses. I have 1 Kordes Earth Angel that is doing markedly "better" in that most of its leaves are intact and it is still at prime foliage level--but I've seen evidence of black spot and what my county extension office determined to be some cane canker. I only use copper and sulphur as directed with diligent management (removing affected leaves and stems, maintaining good air circulation, disinfecting shears per cut, pruning crossing canes, not pruning during wet periods, etc.), but it's often been too wet to apply anything. I'm not ready to give up and dig them out yet, but it's driving me insane. Here is the progress report, from worst to best performing in the garden atm: -Alnwick, ownroot: was covered head to toe in cane canker and had to be completely pruned (canker, botrytis, black spot, powdery mildew) -Evelyn, bareroot (botrytis, canker, black spot, powdery mildew) -Carding Mill, ownroot (botrytis, canker, black spot, powdery mildew) -Golden Celebration, ownroot (botrytis, canker, black spot, powdery mildew) -Lady of Shallot, potted (botrytis, canker, black spot, powdery mildew) -Boscobel, potted (canker, black spot, powdery mildew) -Claire Austin, potted (canker, black spot) -Earth Angel, Kordes: (botrytis, minimal black spot and powdery mildew) -Princess Alexandra of Kent, ownroot (my most disease-resistant Austin atm, I may have pruned slightly for black spot, but no evidence of anything else!) 6 years agoI think benjamin britten would go great with your existing colour scheme. I would say it's not a red though. It's more of a cerise to magenta colour. I do grow him. I loved the one I planted last year so much that I bought another one this year. My one concern would be that he can get big. So I guess you would have to see how big you could actually go. And it smells fantastic - fruity.

6 years agoI grow both. BB gets taller but Darcy blooms the most. We have alkaline clay and I fertilized with alkaline manure. Hallo captured the color of BB very well. Darcy is looking very red but often has more purpley undertones. Darcy does not have much fragrance and does get some bs here. None of my other roses are in bloom yet.
She grows more wide than tall for me bit I'm in zone 4...

6 years agoDarcey is moderately fragrant for me, but the charm of the spring and fall blooms are what make her so charming.
Benjamin Britton is at my local nursery right now but waiting to experience a bloom before I make the decision. Halloblondie's pics and description makes it very tempting.

6 years agoThanks Dave. I was just at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Darcey looked very pretty but could not detect any scent. I didn't find B.B. so couldn't sniff him, Jude the Obscure though was magnificent in every way. Maybe I need to find another spot that could fit a giant, and a big enough pot...
