Best way to clean dusty wood furniture?
Comments (6)Mineral spirits is also great for the general grunge that is made up of dirt/dust mixed with skin oils, like you get on wood banisters, wood chair arms, etc. I've had much success with it: my folks learned this in a furniture refinishing class. If the furniture is just deeply dusty without grunge, though, it may not be necessary. I've brought furniture from the parental attic that was just deeply dusty in the carvings. For that I used a vaccuum cleaner attachment in the left hand and a clean white china bristle brush (stiff bristles) in the right, to dig out the dust while the vaccum nozzle followed behind. The vacuum attachment with bristles was too soft to be much good....See MoreHow best to store an afghan
Comments (17)I don't think the OP actually asked about blocking/steaming. But just in case--I don't ever use steam on my afghans. I lay a plastic tablecloth on the floor, lay out the afghan so it's square and even, and then just spray with warm water in a spray bottle. Re-shape if needed as I work. Then I just let them air dry naturally. As to storage. DO NOT USE MOTHBALLS--they're extremely dangerously toxic. They shouldn't be used inside or even out of doors (some folks use them to repel animals from their gardens. If moths are a potential problem, I'd go with some cedar chips or blocks. A cedar chest would be ideal, probably--and much better than plastic. One thing she's going to want to do is refold them periodically, to keep them from wearing along the fold lines as they sit. But why is she planning on storing them at all? Children love to cuddle under afghans--why not just let them use and enjoy them now. So what if htey get worn a bit--they'll be worn with irreplaceable memories that the kids will treasure all their lives....See MoreBest way to get filtered water if NOT in your fridge?
Comments (34)Fishes, There is basically not a single best fit answer for everyone. Do you know about the quality of your water? What do you want to filter? In our case we have very hard water and a very high level of nitrates and phosphates as some of the city source is well water. So we are going with the K5 reverse osmosis system by kinetico..same as Beekeeper'swife. More expensive but we need it. Our softened water will feed it and I hope to get a drinking water faucet in the prep sink and also feed the pot filler. The K5 system can be installed in the attic and feed the storage tank(which incidentally is bigger in kinetico). I am actually not doing any ice maker. Decided to buy ice instead as we use ice rarely and the ice maker takes too much room in the sub zero freezer drawer. I am tempted by the instant hot (it would be lovely to quickly grab green tea when I am busy during the day but Then with the induction, it does seem a bit much. Comments (59)Well I've been in contact with Stevens Linens in New Hampshire. The company got in contact with the previous owner for me and this is what the previous owner said of my fabric. Mind you this may or may not be their fabric, but he recognized it, but not the label. I think the label would be recognizable for sure. The label should be in the archives of the business. Anyway, this is what the previous owner of Stevens Linens reported to the present day Stevens Linens personal, whom I contacted: "I can't identify the label but I can identify the fabric. It is made with a cotton slub yarn that we used in a lot of upholstery fabric starting in the 1950's. This swatch is very similar to a fabric we wove for Schumacher and was actually used on the Kennedy rocker in the Oval Office. I would say between the label and the fabric it is from the late fifties or very early 60's." Pretty interesting isn't it....See Morelinnea56 (zone 5b Chicago)
