removing mini closet - should I do shelves or just a wall? (pics)
Comments (11)I'm all for using any space one can find to use for storage, but that wouldn't stop me from using this area for displaying family photos too. Actually you can have both! Since this is right outside a bathroom I vote to add shelves to store toiletries, extra TP and even paper towels since the kitchen is close by. Great place for a first aid kit too. So many small items from the kitchen or bath could be stored on shelves I just can't see closing it off with wallboard. In order to display family photos, I'd have the handyman remove the knob, pretty as it is, and replace it with a magnetic latch that will pop open with a push of the finger. I'd buy desktop frames in a size that would fit nicely with the door leaving a bit of the door showing all the way around. Attach them with the open end up so you could slide the photos in from the top with out having to remove the frame from the door....See MoreShould I add storage to this closet wall?
Comments (13)Lily (BTW, that is my cat's name!) The entry to the bedroom is to the right of the cat room. When you are walking past the cat room, you take a right and pass by the opening of the cat room, and then by the bathroom entry on the left and the closet entry on the right, then you keep going until you get to the bedroom. I don’t have a door on the closet because I will be able to see a pretty view through a big window in the opposite bathroom. The closet its huge so I don’t technically need more space, but having a 6 ft wall with just a mirror on it seemed wasteful to me. Yes, the negative would be if I found a great sculpture and it’s bigger than I could fit in the niche!! Other than that, if the casing of the foyer is okay to create the ‘wall/border’ of the niche, then that is great! I love your idea about forming a casing on both sides of the sculpture to really put a frame around it. Hopefully I’ll find something before the house is built! Because I have the space, I AM going to get one of those 3 way mirrors :) I was going to do one of two things. One option is to have 3 mirrors on entire wall opposite the cat room and the niche, and the two outer mirrors would adjust when I wanted the 3-way function. And yes, I was hoping for storage behind all 3 mirrors but it works even if I don't add storage (the mirrors would be the cabinet doors). If I didn’t care about the niche, I could have full hanging space behind the mirrors too. OR, I saw this photo and was wondering if this is a good option if I don’t add more space to the closet. I could keep a little storage behind the two outer sides that project, and the center mirror would be flat against the wall. Then you adjust the side mirrors when needed. The negative is the two side mirrors (the wings) would be a little bit in the way of accessing the hanging clothes on either side. I imagine I don't have space for the shelves on the sides so the side mirrors may look odd just hanging out there....See MoreMaster Closet - Should I add doors inside?
Comments (12)Speaking as a closet designer the short answer is "No" you don't need it. The long answer is "Yes" if you want it. How big is the closet? I assume your are working with the closet design company? If it is contractor or builder they won't consider the details of the space in terms of clothing width, shoe storage math, handbags. The Rule of Thumb is you need a 24" D Panel cabinet to doors to cover clothes. This takes up way space in the closet so do you have see if you have the room. And then you have to leave a space for the doors to open. And of course the big question is what is your budget? It's not loaded question but one that most people can't answer --because most closet systems are custom cut --so there is not a "set price". A 10 x 12" room with doors over the closet in the most classic white would start at 15 -20K --for slab doors not glass or fancy options. The photos the other person posted (which are gorgeous) are more than likely 25K - 35K + closets. The attached photos are form job being installed. Remember it's not a finished job and not professional (to seduce photos). The client opted for some 24" D cabinets with glass doors, some open sections. This a big space 15" Long on one wall, and the closet itself is a quasi "L" shape. This project is 30K...See MoreMaster bedroom remodel- Master closet location dilemma
Comments (14)Keep playing with drawing til something makes sense. I tried to sketch something out, let's see if I can attach it. Did you want to add a tub, or just a bigger shower? If windows can be added to the left wall, it would really add more possibilities! I made the bigger closet skinny so the window light still comes in. This loses the hall closets so it may need more work. I am not a big fan of the hall between the closets, it was my attempt to keep the window. Either of the closets where the master was could be removed to be a sitting area or a desk area. Obviously I am not a professional. I just like looking at and thinking about floor plans. I am sure others will jump in to improve my sketch by criticizing it lol. I left the toilet and one sink in place. I think the shower could use the same drain and it would not be too bad to extend the pipes to make it bigger, and add the second sink. The entry point is a bit crowded but I was having trouble adding a second sink if I made the bathroom door by the closets....See MoreRelated Professionals
