Well, since you said you welcome any and all suggestions, I'll tell you what I think based on the limited information you provided and the limited knowledge I have. It sounds (to me) like you're embarrassed by the present state of your yard and want to rapidly turn it into a source of pride rather than an eyesore. I think that can be done in a matter of weeks if you have a little money to invest in the process. First, I'd get a soil analysis completed to find out if your existing soil is suitable for sustaining healthy turfgrass. You probably have a very acidic soil and possible compaction problems if your soil is mostly clay. The results of your soil analysis should include recommendations for amendments such as organic matter and/or an application of lime to neutralize the Ph. Second, I'd hire a landscape contractor to level your yard (I really don't think this is a job you want to tackle yourself) and incorporate any soil amendments recommended by your soil analysis. This process should churn the existing, unwanted flora back into the soil to decompose naturally, obviating the need to apply Roundup and keeping Lake Washington safe for the salmon. Third, find and install a sod with a blend or mixture of turfgrass varieties adapted to Seattle's climate and the hours of sunlight each side of your house typically receives. If you have moss in your yard now, that may be an indicator some light-loving turfgrass varieties won't thrive on that side of the house. I recommend sod because you seem eager to get something down that will look nice as soon as possible. Fourth, fertilize your new turf using organic means to further protect Lake Washington from harmful chemicals. I have no idea whether turfgrass in Seattle needs supplemental water. Intuition tells me no, but I could be wrong. If your lawn is small, as you say, you can probably get away with just using a hose to apply supplemental water as needed. You'll want to keep new sod from drying out as it's establishing, but at this time of year with cool temperatures and Seattle's rain that's unlikely to become an issue.

Commercial mowers? Seriously? In my opinion, no homeowner should ever consider going commercial. There really is little to no point in doing so. I use an HRC-216 from Honda when I help my father-in-law with his landscape business, and while it is a great machine, it is way more than I would ever need for ~52 times a year. Also, when something does go wrong, they are very expensive to fix. My advice for the OP is to sharpen the blade on the reel he has now and get it working well. Maybe add a weedeater, probably electric, so you don't have to store gas. If the reel has a hard time with your type of grass then go with a cheap mulching mower, gas or electric. When you find yourself with a larger lawn, then consider a premium residential mower like a Super Recycler or Honda. What you want to look for at that point is a decent engine and non-rusting deck. Also, if you do not need self-propelled, don't get it. It adds to the cost and complexity of the mower and is one more thing that can break. Looking at your lawn, a large self-propelled commercial would almost be more of a hassle to use than something smaller and more nimble like the reel mower you have or a 19"ish electric. Also, the money you save could be put towards more landscaping. There are plenty of plants and such that are drought resistant. That would do far more to beautify your lawn than a mower.

My kids joined me, alerted by my animated responses to the hostâs non-stop torrent of advice. Among many amazing discoveries I learned that by adding gypsum to my yard or garden I would improve my problem soils by changing the particle size and loosening compaction. Further searching on the web revealed that gypsum would also improve drainage, decrease acidity, and eliminate soil salts. Previously, I had heard of gypsum for use in soil reclamation projects, but not for a typical urban landscape. Since gypsum is simply calcium sulfate, could this chemical truly transform soil structure and serve as a fertilizer for yards and gardens? The Reality This myth falls into the category of agricultural practices misapplied to ornamental landscapes. Gypsum effectively changes the structure and fertility of heavy clay soils, especially those that are heavily weathered or subject to intensive crop production. Gypsum also improves sodic (saline) soils by removing sodium from the soil and replacing it with calcium. Therefore, one can see improvement in clay soil structure and fertility, and desalinization of sodium-rich soils, by using gypsum. What other effects will gypsum have on soil and plant health? There are a number of scientific studies on gypsum usage both in the literature and on websites. Briefly, researchers have found: ⢠Gypsum does not usually change soil acidity, though occasional reports of both increasing and decreasing pH exist; ⢠Gypsum can increase leaching of aluminum, which can detoxify soils but also contaminates nearby watersheds; ⢠Gypsum can increase leaching of iron and manganese, leading to deficiencies of these nutrients; ⢠Gypsum applied to acid soils can induce magnesium deficiency in plants on site; ⢠Gypsum applied to sandy soils can depress phosphorus, copper and zinc transport; ⢠Gypsum can have negative effects on mycorrhizal inoculation of roots, which may account for several reports of negative effects of gypsum on tree seedling establishment and survival; ⢠Gypsum is variable in its effects on mature trees; ⢠Gypsum will not improve fertility of acid or sandy soils; ⢠Gypsum will not improve water holding capacity of sandy soils; and ⢠Gypsumâs effects are short-lived (often a matter of months) With the exception of arid and coastal regions (where soil salts are high) and the southeastern United States (where heavy clay soils are common), gypsum amendment is just not necessary in non-agricultural areas. Urban soils are generally amalgamations of subsoils, native and non-native topsoils, and - in home landscapes - high levels of organic and non-organic chemical additives. They are also heavily compacted and layered (and gypsum does not work well on layered soils). In such landscapes, it is pointless to add yet more chemicals in the form of gypsum unless you need to increase soil calcium levels. This nutrient deficiency can be quickly identified by any soil testing laboratory for less than a bag of gypsum costs. (If you need to improve sulfur nutrition, itâs wiser to use ammonium sulfate). To reduce compaction and improve aeration in nearly any landscape, application of an organic mulch is more economically and environmentally sustainable.
