Name That Plant!

What is this shrub?

This is the second spring that I've been in this house and I am finally getting around to cleaning up the overgrown back gardens. Can you please help me to identify this shrub?

Also, if you know what it is, do you know if I can trim it now (or should I wait)? Also, how can I prevent it from spreading too much? There are several smaller offshoots popping up that I want to get rid of (last photo).

It's a Prunus species. I don't know all the possibilities in N America. Your geographical location would help people specify which one it is.

I’m vetting the fence will rip eventually. Based on what I have seen while shopping deer exclusion products plastic deer fencing does tend to be made and sold for seasonal use such as protection of warm season vegetable plantings. And not intended to be left in place throughout the year, for years at a time.

The OP may be confusing the Corylopsis/winter hazel with Oemleria cerasiformis or Indian plum/Osoberry. That is also budding out now in more rural, wooded locations and looks deceptively like the corylopsis from a distance. And it IS a native species.

^^^ Correct. Common lilacs are Syringa species, a member of the Olive family. Ceanothus is in the Buckthorn family. Most of the west coast species are native to California and they can be very fragrant. As common lilacs do not really grow well in CA, ceanothus is the closest substitute :-)

Thank you! I apologize - I'm located in Ottawa ON, Canada.

I was so overgrown that it's definitely possible that there's a second plant in there. I'll have to take another look.
