Comments (74)I don't know about everybody else, but my head is dizzy trying to keep what plant is the asnwer referring to, and what question is being applied.......so I beg you to pardon if I make inane replies. Duhhhhh, say what? I'm fortunate that I can jump right in behind Wendy and what I say is "connected" to her plant......thank heaven this day is ending on a happy note......I'm so tired, but fixed an inspired shrimp dish tonight, and now I'm done in. Wendy, there might be hope I can tell the difference in species hosta, maybe one day I can do the fancy sports too. I really like Ventricosa with that cupie doll flip of a curl on each leaf. .....Oh. are there people on the forum who have no childhood memorie of a Cupie Doll? Oops. Well, I remember. And now I have a couple of them and can recognize the family characteristics. YESSSSSSS!...See MoreDo you give your m. Aureomarginata cold protection?
Comments (8)BK, I guess I'll have to hang out at my vet's office a lot more to see what you are talking about. Or do you frequent a HORSTA DOC? As January 2014 approaches, we're having pretty cool weather for the most part, and I don't give any one particular hosta extra consideration. I try to keep them all in the shade. The sun is at its lowest trajectory these days, coming up in tiny increments as the days lengthen. Along about February I'll have to worry about more sun on the dormant pots and try to protect them until mid-March at least. It might be marginally warm enough to let them emerge then. But just think how long the growing season will be for them.....all the way to next November. Even now after multiple freezes and bouts of frost, Hosta 'Cerveza' is still green but not really GROWING. I remember the winter 2011-2012 when I first wintered over some hosta in nursery pots, Stained Glass did NOT go dormant at all. It waited until late June 2012, went dormant for a few weeks, and then came back strong to bloom. Since then, it is performing normally. I consider if it doesn't go cold dormant for the winter, it might go HEAT DORMANT in the summer. No scientific reasoning here....just sooner or later it must take a break. Heat dormancy may be the way hosta cope with a warming climate. Still in experimental stage I'd say. Here is my Stained Glass #1 in May 2012, about to go dormant. I thought it was dying, so I ordered its replacement #2. When it came back to life, it out-performed #2 and produced a scape and bloomed for me that summer right on time. and later in the summer, July 2012...See MoreWhat Did You Have For Dinner From Your Garden Last Night?
Comments (54)Dale I would never be able to describe the exact location of where these morels were found. They were on private property, and I was invited by the owner, or I never would have found it by myself. Now, since she has moved, I'd probably have to trespass or get the new owner's permission. Anyways, you should be happy to know they are to be found in many locations in Oklahoma. Keep tabs on this link, and you should be able to zero in on a good location. I think there's another morel link for Oklahoma as well as this one online. You won't be disappointed if you luck onto a good morel spot. As you will see in the pics in this link, even the homeies love them, lol! Just wait til about April and about four days after a rain. Look for a moist woodland, where some deer and cows have roamed, and there are many such places in Oklahoma. I LOVE morels just about any way you can prepare them. And especially morel soup, or perhaps cut up in small pieces for tempura. A real delicacy. I've been thinking of starting my own little shitake patch. You can buy the spores of those online and perhaps other varieties as well. Dawn I can relate to the harvesting, canning and preserving fatigue. Getting kind of tired of it myself, so when dinner time rolls around and it's just me, it's catch as catch can from the garden. I really do hate to see the summer crops dwindling. Okra not bearing well. The cucumbers that store boughts will NEVER be able to rival are just about kaput. I still have tons of BIG tomatos that haven't ripened yet. Since it's been dry, with no recent rain, I've been allowing them to store up all that deliciousness and not get soggy or insipidly flavorless, so they have been amazing! Especially enjoying the Indian Stipes, which were not new to you, but certainly a delightful first for me. I'm hoping I don't get stuck with having to can jars of pickled tomatos or green tomato relish. I like it, but there's only so much of it I can eat. Today's menu was simply one of my baked buttercup squash, (just the right size for me), with butter and brown sugar, and cooked to pieces pole beans. Since I don't have a family to cook for, sometimes I kind of 'batch' and my folks used to call it. Nice in a way, since I can eat weird stuff that I like, when I like and not have to worry about meal planning per se. Comments (18)Calliope is the Harkness one. Beth, thanks for posting all those beauties! I have CHANDOS BEAUTY, too, and it has bloomed but I didn't get a picture. I think it is going to be outstanding, don't you? Now I have to get MAMMA MIA, FAIREST CAPE, and some of your other ones -(as if I had the room)! I have thought about LEGEND, but since I have to shovel prune in order to plant another rose, I am waiting to see how it does for others this year. That GREETINGS is sure cute! I think Newyorkita has it, too. I have more new ones, but since the summer heat is arriving, I probably won't get good pictures of them until fall....See MoreKarin Black Cat
