Ditas, You have really opened a "sticky wicket" with the topic of invasive plants. There are opinions all over the board on this topic. I will offer mine even though Im sure not everyone will concur. Let me preface this by saying we should all be compelled to assume personal responsibility for our actions. Flittering through life with nary a care for downstream consequences is not only irresponsible, it is intellectually lazy. My pet gardening peeve is some nimrod authoritatively proclaiming, "In gardening, as long as you like it, that is all that matters." What a self-righteous load of hog hooey! Typhoid Mary used essentially the same argument to "justify" her actions. I am certainly in favor of retaining all the rights of citizenship. I am dead set against the politically correct crowd. I do not want a proliferation of plant police. However, with rights come responsibilities. My personal approach to the invasive plant problem is to become informed, inform others and error on the side of caution. Invasiveness is a regional thing. What is invasive here may be quite well-behaved in other areas and vice versa. In the case of Dames Rocket (and many others), if you cant easy find a better plant to replace it, it speaks loudly to ones lack of gardening skills. We all have made errors in judgment. It behooves us to amend those errors. Before we jump on the home gardener too harshly, it should be pointed out that an estimated 80% of the really problematic, invasive thugs have been introduced by the various departments of natural resources and conservation! The list is long: Kudzu, Multiflora Rose, Russian Olive, Crown Vetch, etc., etc. The stuff that the "experts" once encouraged us to plant has become some of our biggest scourges. However, after their goof became apparent, they did assume responsibility for some particularly difficult eradication tasks. The problem is that "the cat" is darn difficult to put back in the bag once you have let him out Need I point out the problems with purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria), an ornamental that escaped the home garden? I believe in leading by example. I no longer grow things like Dames Rocket, Barberry bushes and Burning Bush (Euonymus alata). I destroyed the ones that I used to grow long ago. In cold-winter areas, choose a protected southern exposure and set bulbs slightly below ground level" Lycoris radiata, L. sanguinea and L. sprengeri it also indicates being hardy to Sunset 4. L. squamigera gets a Sunset 2. For all Lycoris it says "Grow in a sunny site that can stay dry during summer dormancy. (In areas of summer rainfall, grow in pots that can be protected from moisture.)" Many bulbs have this same requirement for months of dryness, the development of the bulb in the first place often being an adaptation to a climate or site where the conditions are unsuitable for maintaining a complete plant body with leaves for much of the year. Tulips, for instance, are native to deserts where it is mostly too dry or too cold for them to be above the ground anytime except spring.

If you are a first timer, don't worry about bringing a ton, but save room for the ton you will be taking home! =) Most people pre-trade for just a handful of plants & have quite a bit more just ready to give out. Some people will save a plant for someone, then just pick something from their table (kinda like a first pick) at the swap. That's kind of like a halfway pre-arranged trade...lol. What can I plant that is deer resistant? This list of deer resistant plants was compiled from Gardenweb postings and other sources. As you can see from the follow-up postings at the bottom of the list, RESISTANT is the key word. Deer can be quite the gourmets and yours may still be partial to some of the plants on this list. Deer that are hungry enough will eat everything bare from the ground up into the trees as high as they can reach. Many of the plants on this list are poisonous or medicinal. If a plant smells bad to you when you crush the leaf or stem, it probably smells just as bad to the deer. (P.S. Don't forget that rabbits, squirrels, groundhogs and other animals might be just as destructive as deer in your garden.) I was all ready to quibble and say that I thought Four-O'clocks were Mirabilis, not Clarkia, when I saw you'd got Mirabilis listed as Four-oclocks under annuals. The joy of common names! Have you ever grown clarkia? I understand they do OK here and are really attractive in part-shade. They also devoured a barberry, and hostas are out of the question. One day last winter we looked out our window and saw a doe eating birdseed out of one of our bird feeders! What's tasty is apparently a regional issue, also, so you might try checking your local (in my case, Maryland Cooperative Extension's Web site) extension service for a list of plants that are "deer candy" or avoided by deer in your area. I've had them nibble on Japanese white spiraea (Spiraea albiflora) and the usual tulip and hosta foliage. They prefer my neighbors grass. She has it professionally taken care of every week. I wish she would stop. Our yards are attached and they wander up this way frequently. Moved from California to Virginia last year, so much to learn! Deer are different in different areas. For example mule deer in CA usually won't touch impatiens, but white tail in VA LOVE it. I spent a lot of money to fence in my back yard. The only sure way. (I hope) Also, they won't eat my iris, but they eat certain daylilies, but not others.
