Deck & Pergola Design: Architect, Landscape Architect, Other?

last modified: 7 years ago

I tried Google, and searching Houzz, and I'm still unsure of *who* designs decks and pergolas. I'm pretty sure the answer is "architect," but then I realized that I don't actually know the full extent of what landscape architects do, so maybe a landscape architect is better for this?

I ask because we just went out to the house's site yesterday (foundation poured!), and measured the foundation thickness. We've got 32".

The (tract, not custom, just FYI) builder has an uncovered 10x10 patio planned, right outside the back door, but we are prepared to ask him to build the smallest patio he possibly can (we assume he can't delete it entirely, but will ask). We figure that demolishing a 3x3 patio, 32" thick, is a heck of a lot easier than a 10x10. We'd prefer to *not* deal with the cracking of a patio of that size (clay soil), and so are considering a deck instead.

The local, well rated, deck/pergola company says they can design and build... But I browsed their gallery... And I want a "person of design talent." ;-)

Thanks, y'all!
