Where's my verbena hastata?

Happy Spring to all!

I planted Verbena hastata several years ago and love it. By year three, my less carefully manicured corners were overflowing with selfseeded volunteers. But so far, this year, I see none. My V. Stricta is well up. Everything is going gangbusters. Is V. Hastata a late starter? Any other ideas? BTW, my beds are extensive, with varying conditions, and the plant previously has been in many locations. Now, zip.

V. hastata can be short lived, but it seems unlikely every plant would have died of old age in the same year. Was there an unusual climatic change such as being extra dry, extra cold or a late cold spell? Did you add compost or other fertilizer from an outside source? I have purchased previously reliable potting soil that stunted and even killed my plants before I figured it was the common factor. All I can advise is to look for seedlings over the growing season, and husband any you find.

Thank you for responding to my question. You may not have noted, it's 2 years old. The seedlings did appear, just later than I expected. I am accepting, now, that V. hastata in my landscape will be predictable in its return every year, but unpredictable in its specific location. It continues to be one of my favorite participants!

Hello - deolmstead Verbenas or Vervain can grow from 6 inches to 4 feet high and may be bushy or creeping in growth. The toothed or cut leaves usually grow opposite each other and reach a length of 1 to 3 inches. In the summer or fall, slender stalks arise and bear flattened clusters of flowers, 2 to 3 inches across. They may be multi-colored, red, rose, peach, pink, purple, lavender, or blue, usually with a white eye. In the summer and autumn, thin stems topped with clusters of tiny, bright purplish-pink flowers grow. POTTING: Verbenas are hardy from zones 5 to 10 depending upon the variety. They can be grown as annuals in cold climates; they are tolerant of drought and are especially suitable for growing in hot, desert climates. Grow these plants in fertile, well-drained soil that is moist to on the dry side, in a sunny location. Mulch with dry straw in cold winter areas. PROPAGATION: Start seeds indoors at a temperature of 65 Âº F. Plant them in sandy soil, 8 to 10 weeks before it's safe to plant outside. Seeds may be sown directly outdoors where they are to grow when the soil is warm. The roots of some species, such as V. rigida may be divided in the fall in mild climates; elsewhere, in the spring. Stem cuttings may be taken in the spring or fall and inserted in sand. I think your Verbena is a survivor!

Laurie, I have just re-read your first post and seen your spcific queries. V Bonariensis is not that hardy, and may not survive your zone 6. But that need not be a problem, its seeds around a lot, so you will never be without it. And it grows the same height and flowers virtually as well in the first year. It can get powdery mildew it it gets too dry, but it isn't a problem in the UK, which is probably cooler in the summer - though it went into the 90's last summer. You don't need to pich it back. By its nature it is a very see through plant. And no you don't need to deadhead. Butterflies love it more than anything else in my garden.

Good luck. The one you grew looks great! What a healthy plant. :) By the way, there are also some Buddleia that has scented flowers. Of course none of them smell as divine as Aloysia virgata, but I notice these are smelling nicer than the Buddleia I use to grow as a teenager. Oops, I was looking at Unanswered questions, and did not notice the date. I'm glad the plant returned. I have also noted that native plants don't always stay where you put them. I planted Pitcher Sage (Salvia azurea) one fall and it didn't come up until the second winter, then only lasted about 3 years.

BTW, thanks for seeking out the unanswered questions. I've been around long enough to know the good people on this sight 1) may not know the answer, 2) may miss the question, 3) lead busy lives. But some who get no response may get their feelings hurt. Your approach helps.
