sump pump coming on but not moving water

After the very heavy rain last night, and I would guess 8" in the past week, this afternoon I noticed that the sump pump is switching on and stays on (instead of shutting off after several seconds as it normally would), but is not moving water out the pipe to the curb. It was working as usual before today. I ended up unplugging it out of concern that the motor would burn out.

I wasn't able to budge the pit cover to pull it up to look at it, but I wouldn't know what I was looking for anyway. I've never had it out. I was surprised that the cover was wet on its underside when I tried to lift it.

I assume there is a clog somewhere in the system.

I am going to take a long bamboo pole to check the pipe from the curb as far as I can (I've heard that chipmunks have sometimes built nests in the openings).

Any suggestions will be appreciated!
