Need Help/Advice - Kitchen Lighting Plan
Comments (1)Option B seems better. Except maybe for lining up the 2 lights on the fridge side counter with the others. Have you considered the possibility of using the ECO4-575 (Cree CR4) 4" recessed lights?...See MoreAdvice on my kitchen plan please
Comments (8)I'll try to be more specific. Let's see, when you walk into the front door (in the new plan) & enter the foyer you will see the kitchen. To the left (other side of the island) will be the living room. Looking at the plan, the space in front of the pantry is the doorway to a short hall that leads to the master bedroom. To the left of the fridge is the entrance to the dining room. Area on the other side of the island is the living room (which flows into the dining room) There was a window over the sink, but was blocked with the previous owners addition (a master bdrm) so we just eliminated it (that¡¦s where the range is now). The only windows will be in the living room & dining room. The door you see to the left of the sink led to the master, but we moved that entrance to the area in front of the pantry. The area/wall behind the range is actually where our master closets are. I do like to entertain & cook. Right now it's just DH, myself & our 9 mth old, but we hope to add to our family in the next couple of years. I had my heart set on a large, one level island, but since you'll see the kitchen from the foyer & living everyone is suggesting I do bilevel. DH also suggested I eliminate the desk area, but since it was off to the side I didn't think I would actually use that counter often?? But if it were just cabinets I guess they would really come in handy for my appliances (I have many :) Unfortunately we don¡¦t have any more walls to take down/move since our master is literally right behind the kitchen. I didn't really want to start from scratch (DH will give me a hard time for being indecisive) but I'm still open to ideas (afterall, I do spend a lot of time in the kitchen). Contractor has started but still has a long way to go so I have a little time!...See MoreReview/Critique Kitchen Design?
Comments (9)It works better to me when the blues are massed together. I would make the windows near the cooktop a bit narrower (like 3-6"), but taller like an entire foot or more. Windows that reach up higher tend to let in more light and ones that reach down towards the counter improve the view and feeling of openness. I have windows on both sides of the range that start about 10 inches up from the counter top and its ok for me at my height (5'7"). If I was any shorter, I'd be unhappy. I wish I had left a bit more wall showing between the windows and the hood. It's because hoods are deeper than what's shown in a design program. To be effective, hoods should be 24"-27" deep and not the 18" drawn by ikea. As far as I can tell from the drawings, the dining area is about 10 feet wide - inclusive of the aisle that needs to run in front of the island. The table needs to be placed at least 32" off the sidewall and at least 54" from the island with 60" being preferred. A 54" aisle will maintain an ok walkthrough of 30" between occupied chairs and the island. A 60" aisle maintains a open distance of 36". I'd hesitate to go below 54", particularly if the back contains some sort of outdoor cooking or entertaining area. Using the measured width in your current layout of 128-5/8, to get a 54" aisle, you'd have to use a table not wider than 42". For 60", the table would need to be no wider than 36". I'm not seeing any way that you could have a 70" aisle without a banquette on the sidewall....See MoreAppliance/Sink Layout Advice, please!!
Comments (36)Meant to add "what remodelfla said." That's a lay-out similar to what I'm planning when we remodel. Right now I'm leaning towards adding a prep sink to the island (sure would have come in handy at Thanksgiving) but I also like the idea of having my relatively small island free and clear of obstructions. I also like Buehl's plan but I didn't realize you were short on wall there. But definitely lose that one island stool as she suggests. 44" is not enough clearance between two seating areas, IMO. One more thought. Have you considered a corner sink? You'd need to shift your cooktop down a bit but this set-up might be a possibility for you. Put the DW next to the fridge, than a set of drawers or garbage pull-out or ? between DW and corner sink. I suggest this in case you are tight on space to put the DW between fridge and sink (I can't tell by your drawing above) and don't like the idea of a sink off-center from the window. It would be similar to lucretzia's kitchen set: (see more of her lovely kitchen here or this one featured at Kelly Morisseau's blog, Kitchen Sync. Both of the above have corner windows, which you don't have, but hopefully they will give you additional ideas for your kitchen....See MoreC.J. S.
