Throw pillow coordination help!

last modified: 7 years ago

I was wanting to refresh the throw pillows on our living room sectional, but I'm not sure if these work together ... too many patterns? What are the rules with throw pillow coordination? Couch is light gray, walls are light tan, curtains are robins egg blue (light Aqua/blue shade). We have a cushy armchair in the room as well next to the window, and it is the pattern of the pillow on the far left (white w/ gray).

Here is what I had before. Swapped out the aqua pattern pillow for the denim/navy one.

Help please! I'm just not sure what looks better. Maybe I need to just get rid of all of them and start over haha! I love light blues, aquas, greens with grays/tans and maybe a pop of color - red, coral, orange, yellow? - to liven it up a bit. Pottery Barn style is what I aspire to. I really like ikat prints but can never seem to find one that would work. :( Would LOVE any suggestions of pillows that might work well (and where to buy them)! Maybe some with a little texture, maybe varying up the sizes...? Help!

Thanks! East coast here too, but I'm a night owl :)

so between these, you prefer the third with the coral/blue grouping?

aaaaahhhhh, i missed the pillows! remember to look at mine, i have around a 1000, and i always try for <$25 ea. cheapest stuffers are at amazon. be careful with wayfair, they have a lot of polyester. some of your pillows i have sets of coordinated by going to various stores. like this one.

Of the originals you show the second grouping is the best, having a floral, a geometric, and the one matching the chair, tying it all together. For the chair you might consider a lumbar pillow in a color taken from the floral pillow on the sofa.

Any of the 3 you posted will... I don't have a favorite per se. So, you can get any of them.....

They match both floral... the floral with the coral pink tones appears to have a sea foam background so being a more blue green they appear to all work fine.

I would get a couple solids for the other grouping though. A extra green blue velvet lumbar for certain..... Perhaps get the second grouping with a couple multiples since you have a giant couch.... Not so many you have to move them all over to sit and so on :) after you get them then work on the other grouping? Maybe you just want to get some and return some... as I mentioned if they offer down which they do on some go with down for the add'l 5 or 6 dollars....I know at least 3 come down filled or poly filled.

Art is too small and too high. The fan is an obtrusive lump. Change it out for a white one.
Put a lumbar cushion or two into the mix, but tone down the patterns.

jbtanyderi, how can you tone down the patterns much in this! A floral, geometric and solids????

Ok so I think I am going to purchase two different sets and see which works better in the room... a coral/blue set and a teal/blue set.

For the coral/blue, I'm going to go with...

One of these for the large solid:

    This for the geometric:

    This for the floral:

    This for the lumbar:

(I'll probably stick one of the coral lumbar pillows on the chair as well to tie it into the couch)

(See next post for teal/blue set)

And for the teal/blue set, I'm still debating on a couple of these but think I'm going to go with...

    This for the large solid:

(Or maybe with yellow or navy piping?)

or one of these (same from the first set)...

    This for the geometric:

    This for the floral:

    Or one of these...

And one of these for the lumbar:

Obviously still undecided on a couple of these! It's so much easier to visualize when you put them together in a collage but I don't have that app!

can you help me decide on the ones I'm still indecisive about? Especially the floral from the second set (I love that second floral I found and think it would bring in the dark and light blues really well - thoughts??)

    thank you!

The middle blue is too blue as your pillows lean greeny blue... as for the others you'd have to cut and paste them and see them all together to better see how they marry......the other floral pillows are a tad bland, but if you like them go for it...

As we discussed I would go with this combination:

Which middle blue? Do you have the link to the velvet lumbar?

The middle blue of the last three lumbar pillows you posted... I believe it to be too blue as these are leaning slightly greeny blue for the most part minus the piping on the linen solid which I do believe as a whole will work fine

    https://www.wayfair.com/House-of-Hampton%C2%AE-Carlisle-100%25-Cotton-Lumbar-Pillow-Cover-HOHN7344.html?piid%5B0%5D=18663598

This is the lumbar in the set that is above of 4 pillows: a floral, geometric Ikat type and the linen with piping and this pillow posted here above.

They call this, "dark Blue" however it isn't dark blue on the computer as it's a slight greenish yet blue velvet. I hope it appears that way on your monitor too as on mine as they work well together.

If you click on on the colors avail in this lumbar there is a, "Navy" which I feel is a dark blue... not how this appears though and how it appears matches well... I hope they work... if you get them and when you do if you get them please post!!

    Good Luck!!

If you prefer the other lumbars they will most likely work.. however, the first one of the three you posted I had posted earlier and I believe it would work... the third appears it would work very well too... toss up.

I think a velvet makes a world of difference in the mix, but go with your gut it's all personal preference.... get what pleases you as you keep second guessing. I prefer a velvet as it adds some texture and richness... yet, that is me :) You may prefer all cotton or semi linen and that is absolutely ok too.... of the three lumbar sets you posted above my thought is the center of the three is too full on blue for what other pillows are in the mix for the most part the other two either work better.

INteresting.....91 comments for throw pillows. Haha I love Houzz, lots of great advice.

Your room is very one color and very one note in intensity. So if it were me I would pick a color that is in the room and just do it and another color in a lot of different styles but strong color. My den is done in blue white and grey so all my five pillows are done in marine blue linen, brilliant marine blue in silk, and then a shiny metallic silver and grey in a woven weave, a pale lavendar and ivory geometric in a satin stitch pattern, and finally a embroidered heron bird on linen....the key is that I kept the colors of blue silver and cream and did them in intense interesting patterns....silk, linen, satin stitch, embroidery and metallic.

Neutral white cream grey rooms with strong, dramatic, intresting, and jump out at your pillows in any color combination.....have fun and good luck.

jlynn1187 the coral at World Market online was available last Friday when you asked to find a pillow that went with the coral/pinky floral... it was only 9.99 so given that it probably sold out as time was of the essence :(

Thanks all! @Porter - the pillow shows as available online but when I enter my shipping location it is not available to ship to me. And when I searched for nearby stores, there are none less than four hours away. I even tried calling one of the stores to see if they could ship it but they couldn't locate it anywhere because it was clearance. Oh well, the search for a coral lumbar pillow continues... the issue is that most of the ones I'm finding are either too orange or too pink! Boo :(

Alright took some photos of the new pillow on the couch. I also picked up a teal lumbar pillow at homegoods that looked similar to the ones in some of the previous posts. Let me know what you guys think! I love the floral pillow but it's definitely taupe/tan and beige, and it didn't look right sitting flush against the gray couch, so I have other pillows serving as a barrier between the couch and pillow. And the teal pillow might be a little too teal for me- I LOVE aqua because it's light and calming, and although teal is in the same family, it's a little too bright for the room maybe, and for me. Thinking I might be better off with a deeper teal/green if I'm going to pull in a darker shade of blue.

Heres the pillow next to the white geometric print pillow I own (white geometric print is the same as on the armchair we have in the same room)...

And here it is up against a light blue pillow that I own (but don't love and am trying to replace)...

And here it is with the lumbar pillow thrown into the mix...

And here's what I currently have, for comparison...

    So what do you think??

And these are the other pillows I was planning on getting for this set... probably swap out all of my existing ones

    Geometric...

    And a solid... this one

    Or one of these...

And finally, here was the other floral design pillow I was considering...

I like all these except the 2nd plain blue one. For some reason the fabric doesn't speak to me like the other aqua fabric. It might be good for cold weather, however, as it feels heavier IMO.

maybe you should do the round? or pick out another color like the gray or yellow? or choose one of the lumbars in that set?

the pillow you chose as your other selection is part of the same set as your first choice, i believe the reason they look different is computer differential. they are both part of the same set as the 2 lumbars above.

Thanks! Those are all pretty options! I've ordered several and just waiting for them to arrive so I can try out in the room.

I also found a seller on etsy who makes pillows using these fabrics, and she suggested a few pillow combinations as well. See photos below. Any of these grab you?

i think the blue in the geometric pillow of the first set is too dark. the second set is good, though i would not choose the solid color nor geometric of any of them. the rest of sets i have to ask - did you want to invite red in? never seen the red one. they even make curtains out of the other one.

Thanks for your feedback! This is the geometric pattern pillow I had ordered - what do you think about this one?

And regarding bringing in the red, I originally found this pattern on a Target pillow, and it looked much more coral than red. I'm not opposed to bringing in the coral for a punch of color. Here's the Target pillow in the collage from above:

Oh and the solid chenille pillow shown above arrived yesterday, and I'm not crazy about it - plus it's a little small. So it will probably be returned.

    Thanks!

Love #2,4,&5 on the Etsy pictures. Your geometric print from before would go well also IMO
