Any reasons to think this isn't a Brother Stefan?

Brother Stefan
Comments (8)Thank you for all the informative replies. I'm from Chicago, IL and I'm just on my first year with hostas. I do have several such as Paul's Glory, Guacamole, Stained Glass, Golden Tiara, Emerald Tiara, Blue Cadet, Blue Mouse Ears, Spritzer, Allegan Fog, Masquerade, High Society, and Heart & Soul. Most are already planted around the yard and around the house but the tiny ones are in pots and kept indoors beside the windows. I also have giants on the way such as Titanic, Parhelion, and Blue Angel that I'll be placing on the east side of my garage. Guys, your Brother Stefans all look stunning! Based on your photos, sunlight is indeed a factor when it comes to its coloring. Watering is undoubtedly very important, especially during hot days. Can't wait for my tiny Stefan to mature like yours. @MBug, your Brother Stefan looks really nice beside the smaller Golden Tiara. @Lavandargrrl, I wish I also had an Oak tree in my yard. How old is your Brother Stefan? @Moccasinlanding, those two are equally beautiful! I believe that is the first Stefan "sport" I have seen. Keeping hostas in pots is a smart idea. Will my larger hostas survive indoors during winter? Attache is a pic of Paul's Glory (my favorite, so far). Started out with about 7 leaves last May. Now, it has bloomed and doubled in size!...See MoreBrother Stefan....to move or not to move, that is the question.
Comments (4)Jon, I am hoping you will get more comments from BS growers (Newhostalady, Mbug, etc.) as I can only offer observations from a new-owner's (2015) perspective. Denis also has a 2015 model ;-) and may have noticed something about it colouring up. (aside: I have noticed that some of your hostas do already, and will likely grow more in an upright fashion in their dappled environment as they have to reach for the sun. I think that aspect makes them even more attractive IMO.) What seems to be the same as last year is that my BS develops more colour as time goes on throughout the season....starts off pale then ramps it up, sun notwithstanding. I have mine in sun until around 1:00 (in shade now so I snapped a pic for you) so it is a lot lighter all over. I really like the deep green margins of yours and think it looks spectacular. I wouldn't move it - I think it will get more stunning for you as time goes on. :D fwiw. last August...was potted and under tree but it didn't get as much sun as it does planted this year. I am not sure if it will remain there - I think I may actually like its colouring a bit deeper. I hope NHL post a photo of hers...it has darker margins, crisper colours and way better looking than mine, as is Mbug's. BC has one too, I think? Jon, what degree of colour are you wishing to achieve compared to what you have at this point?...See MoreBrother Stefan or Hudson Bay? For variegated center in full shade?
Comments (8)I would also recommend Brother Stefan. Mine was new last year and really impressed me not only with its growth, but colour AND rugosity. As I am still out of the country, I have no idea what it looks like today, but this photo from September 19th shows very nice colour and the corrugation just adds to its good looks. It is exposed to sun from sunup until 1:30, at which time it is in shade provided by the house for the rest of the day. This next photo is from late August 2015 and the colouring is brighter due to no afternoon shade, for comparison. For a relatively young plant, I am impressed with the amount of corrugation already. Love this hosta, don't have HB but feel you won't be disappointed if you choose BS....See MoreBrother Stefan - 2 Different Versions?
Comments (12)@Pretty Birds, The hosta to the left of Brother Stefan is Deja Blu. It has cool seed pods, too. @ConnieMay, my Brother Stefan is about 10 years old. It is on the southwest corner of my property, in front of a very old lilac that provides dappled shade except for 2 -3 hours of morning sun exposure. It is in zone 4b near Minneapolis at the 45th parallel, planted in clay overlaid with almost 20 years of compost, decades of decayed spruce needles and fine bark mulch. Here are a few leaves with several shades of green. It's near the far right end of the hostas in this picture. You can barely see it, peeking out of the ferny shade with El Nino in front of it and Queen of the Nile/Dee's Golden Jewel to its right....See Morerouge21_gw (CDN Z5b/6a)
