Media center wall ideas

We just moved into this house and finally everything in our great room is delivered and set up. Before anything, some notes about what you see since it's kind of a wide angle photo -

1. 12' ceilings (5' open above the TV before reaching moldings)

2. This is a 70" TV even though it looks tiny. The top of it is 6.5' high. The "dead space" above it looks bigger in the photo than in person.

3. The media center is 7' long

4. The distance from the subwoofer to the wall is 3' - to the right an alcove leading to the master BR. If I can find a table that can straddle the subwoofer great otherwise.... To the LH an angled wall (bookcase w/knick knacks)

5. While this piece is modernish, the decor trend I'm going for is British Colonial (World)

6. The chest on the LH side is antique hand carved Camphorwood (not used as a table) - I have a larger wicker chest that I could swap in it's place but that's not a table either.

7. The current space on either side of the media center is where I thought - maybe tall artificial bamboo or palm plants?

It was suggested once before to put a line of photos up either side. I'm thinking that would just continue the modern media center piece outward, so it's not really what I'm looking for.

I'm just searching for ideas.... I would have gone with a seagrass wallpaper but that might shrink the room visually, which is already cramped.

I would make an art gallery of that whole wall, with subjects that are appropriate to the British Colonial theme.

Since most electronics is black, black painted or stained shelves would be one of many alternatives. Yes, most electronics are black today ... in the past, they've been silver. Will the trend turn back again? Who knows? Regardless, I agree with black shelves, and black blends nicely with slate. Depending upon your budget, this could be black painted wood or black granite /slate /soapstone.

Because the fireplace & stone take up the entire wall, I worry a wall unit would make that side of the room feel heavy. A long console with some art/wall decor will fill up the space nicely.

With a tv that large, I'd have to try to minimize it's impact on the decor with something like this:

Is your subwoofer wireless? Ours is and I have it hidden in the corner behind an end table, which you could do on the LH side, sorta behind or beside the ladder. Aktillery has a much longer chest under her TV and the wall is darker than yours. If you get a longer chest for that TV wall, you could use your beautiful carved chest for a coffee table and if you want, a tall plant on the RH side in the corner.

Erin, I have a large tree in my corner as well.

I use an uplight, not turned on in this photo. With my dark wall it seems to recede without the lighting.

Thanks all for some good ideas! I had originally considered growing the wall with flanking 8 cube bookcases - and possibly a bridge - trying to give it more of a built in look - but ultimately felt it was going to be too heavy of a look (for lack of better term).

At first I wasn't convinced with aktillery's gallery of unmatched frames/items, but it's grown on me. I see there are actually two bases used to achieve the extra extended foundation - where ours is a single 84' cabinet. We actually had a 96" but it was damaged and was sent back. These are unusually large size single pieces - most media centers don't get that big. I don't see adding more in our case. There's really not room for it.

In this photo, I've temporarily inserted a couple of ficus trees to fill in the sides as an example of one idea - my thought was to go with bamboo however, and fill the RH side corner with a large palm.. I also swapped the Camhporwood chest with the larger wicker one, and added pillows, which seems to balance better. So, for now it looks like maybe going with filling a gallery across the empty wall above the TV and a bit down the outsides.

The sub is wired so will have to figure out a way to hide/decorate around it. Worst case I could make a fabric cube cover/table. The wall color could maybe be darker but that starts to drift away from the theme a bit.

Just an idea... I love symmetry but the two plants look a bit overplanned. I would use one and then a pice of art on the other side and maybe add the plant in the corner. Basically, consider adding a smaller piece of art about the chest keep the tree and then add a larger piece of art next to the tv stand on the right and place the tree down more towards the corner of the room. Just my two cents.

Thanks AK - yes the two identical symmetrical plants was bugging me a bit too. I'll probably move the subwoofer in tight to the cabinet on the RH side and go with a larger palm further right near the corner...

Just dropping back in to update - I still have to assemble the various small frames and images for the wall surrounding the TV, but it's coming along! I put the ceiling fan up and have been adding plants and decorator items.
