I grow everbearing red raspberries here in Madison, Wisconsin. These tend to spread, and every year I transplant a few in the spring. However, it is possible to transplant in the fall. The advantage to fall planting is that the seedling has a chance to establish the roots, before the plant begins to leaf out and make demands on the root system for water. If you transplant now, the leaves will fall off in November or December, and of course, you won't be getting any blossoms or fruit this year. The growth will be underground, where you can't see it. Chances are that the raspberry seedling will leaf out and take off next spring.

Scott, Layering is a means of propagation. I have a Celeste I am planning on removing from the ground in many pieces. I am not anticipating doing this until September and removing them from the parent tree until November/December. There are many varieties that should do very well in our area. Celeste, Alma, LSU Purple, LSU Gold are some that do. I have also seen a rather large and very productive Brown Turkey in League City. The first two I mentioned seem to be the more popular in the area. As you drive around you can see many hanging over fences in people's back yards. It use to be in the early 1900s that the area between Santa Fe and Friendswood was a major fig production area. There was about 18,000 acres of fig orchards and two major fig processing plants in the area. So many varieties are going to be "carefree". Celeste is a popular variety because it has a closed eye, so it won't spoil so easily in our humid environment. Alma has a drop of resin that covers the eye to protect it from souring. ~james

I fertilize once a week all the way through August here in zone 7.

This is very common. I have 17 trees in a container orchard in the back of my yard planted just this way. I bring these containers into the garage each winter to keep from having to protect them as well as to get a very good shot at a breba crop. Doing this is not without challenges. I find that maintenance of the proper moisture in the containers require constant attention. Watering every day or every other day in the hot days of summer is required. Also, you need to make sure that the hole you dig for the container has good drainage. I have two trees that suffered over-watering with the recent tropical storm that came through. They are recovering now ... but they almost bought it. With the saturation of the soil, the holes for my containers filled with water. It was not until i saw leaves yellowing that i put 2-and-2 together an realized what was going on. I immediately pulled my containers from the holes to find each with 8" of standing water ... not good. -Steve
