Mail Order Bare Roots vs Potted
Comments (16)Windeaux-you are right, no bare roots at Rogue. Campanula-One year I bought some of those "containerized" roses locally also. Big surprise. I paid an extra $10 for five gallons of potting soil. I guess those have to stay in the pot for awhile. In line with your responses I'll take more precautions against the fierce winds and temp fluctuations. I thought the early warm temps were in my favor but I think they worked against me. The bare roots I received this year had much better root systems and looked much fresher than last year so I thought I was home free. Back to the basics. It wasn't all a loss. I will have to say my not at all Passionate Kisses has a really full large cream bloom and my Crimson Bouquet put up with the way I treated it and is doing well. Since it's the second year in a row for one company I'm asking for a re-issue on the mislabeled ones....See MoreBare root VS potted?????
Comments (3)Lois..Personally, I wouldn't buy bare roots..they take so long to grow and even tho you save a few bucks ..they are slow going....What you want to pay for is a good size rooted clematis..the bigger the rootball the better the clematis..when ordering the plant from a nursery to be delivered they will most probably be cut back for shipping..and it's better for the vine..you don't have to worry about them getting all broken..I don't want to admit online what I spent for one clematis ..early on in my addiction...but use a reputable vendor and get a good plant..stay away from bare roots till you feel you have gotten your Clematis legs and feel confident and are patient enough to wait out the long period for maturity...if you are just starting out you might wanna considering trying your green thumbs at the Viticella/pruning group 3s..they are fun and easier to grow and dependable IMHO...so, if one of your pruning group 2s wilt..you still got something going on in the gardens...Jeanne...See MoreBare Root Eastern Red Cedar, Another buying mistake, plant or pot
Comments (7)i really hate that you are plating this invasive weed ... though it is native in some areas .. where are you??? but that said... you could probably throw them.. bare root on the driveway for the rest of summer.. the wind would blow them to the edge.. and they would root in.. and live ... i too .. prior to knowing better... literally ripped one footer from the sand in august.. and planted them elsewhere.. and forgot to water them ... and they lived ... who needs a shovel... lol ... well i did.. to dig the new hole ... there are much better conifers for any project... and they are not expensive when bought at that size... see link.. as an example of what is available ... but do try to plant in the proper season .... it just make success.. so much easier .... ken Here is a link that might be useful: link...See MoreTaking A Bare Rooted Tree And Potting Into Gritty Mix
Comments (28)Hi Kassieb, Wow.. Haven't seen this thread for a long time!! Congratulations on your treasures that you picked up in Hawaii! I am Sure you had a wonderful time. Just love the islands.... I would always put slits In the bottom of your container that you root in.. I like the clear solo cups or cups from Starbucks.. I used to use bottles.. But I like clear cups better.. ( a friend started me when he sent a cutting rooted in a red solo cup). ;-). I take a pair of scissors and make four slits on the bottom edge of the cup.. Water once and then let them sit on heat and let them work their magic.. It can take up to 8 weeks or so to root, so make sure you are patient when rooting. Have fun!!! Hi Ed!! Those were some beautiful cuttings.. Many thanks to friends!!! BBB is Brads Buds and Blooms.. They are In Florida Laura...See Morefruitnut Z7 4500ft SW TX
