What parts do I need for a hand held shower?

We are building a new house. We will have a handheld shower with a slide bar as the only fixture in our master shower. We are looking at the Grohe New Tempesta. It comes with the handheld shower, the slide bar and the hose. I believe we also need a valve trim set(handle to turn shower on), rough in valve and outlet elbow. Is there anything else needed? I wish they just sold all these items together as a package. It's confusing.

For the valving and trim fixtures, that's pretty much it. For the shower; wall outlet, hose, shower head, slide bracket, bar. For the valve; valve body and compatible valve trim.

Some addition info here. Info is old, but the bits and pieces needed pretty much remain unchanged.

Mongo thanks for pointing me to that thread. You mention valve and valve body. The valve trim indicated the valve model needed. Is the valve and valve body this entire piece?

tryhard - a handheld can be mounted to a vertical (usually metal) bar on the wall of the shower so the user can adjust where the handheld sits on the wall, if that makes sense. kimkitchy - I vote for both a fixed and a handhled on a slider if the shower is large enough; if you and hubby ever need to (or want to ;) shower at the same time; and/or if you have children that would like to have their "own" height shower head. If you only have space for one, I would recommend the handheld mounted on the sliding bar, since that gives you more flexibility than one that sits in a little cradle mounted stright to the wall. Thanks everyone! Wellllll, ging9, we would probably do the same as you, but at the end where the bench will be is a window...of all things. It's kinda crazy but we want to keep it. It is not an exterior window now, but it once was. It now looks out over a stairwell and beyond that are windows that look out to the lake. You can literally be taking a shower and see the lake! I am concernced about the body sprays blasting all the way to the window, but hubby said he would figure that out. So, in my case, all controls would have to be on the same end. That's why I think the hand held spray on the pole is all I should probably get along with the body sprays cause I've never had them and can't resist. Everyone else agree? Thanks.

the exact answer differs by brand, but generally you need shower body and trim pieces rain shower head handheld shower on bar, normally a kit wall elbow for that handheld diverter to switch between handheld and rain, body plus trim kit some of the online sites will have customer service and or "items need" that will help you through the process. don't take this the wrong way, but it sounds like you need help. is there a plumber, general contractor on the job? if so you should ask them what specifically you need. if not, and you know how to do the work but just don't understand how they sell the piecs, it sounds like you would need a salesperson (possibly local) walk you through the requirements. I'm not a plumber, just a homeowner who went through this on my shower. I have a regular head, a hand held, and 2 body sprays. I needed a salesperson to walk me through everything. some things aren't too expensive (like the shower body) and some seem to knock your socks off(trim peices and diverters). I used delta, (although things aren't in yet) mainly b/c it seemed like a good brand that had what I was looking for, that didn't cost a fortune. my plumber likes the grohe stuff.... but that would have been significantly more.

Can I talk you into not doing a handheld as your only fixture in a master shower?

We did a fixed shower head and a handheld in 4 showers and will do the same for the last remodel of a tub/shower. Handhelds never provide as good/strong stream of water as a fixed head.

When I wrote "For the valve; valve body and compatible valve trim."

I have "valve" followed by a semicolon, I meant for what followed the semicolon to be a list of "valve parts".

So for a complete valve assembly, you want the rough brass valve body itself, which gets buried in the wall, and then the pretty chrome valve trim that you see and touch inside the shower to cover the valve body.

In your photo you show the brass valve. You're right, that is the "valve body". You then want the pretty chrome (or other finish) trim to cover that valve body. With the valve body and the valve trim, you'll have a complete valve assembly.

As you wrote, a lot of websites will have you pick out the valve trim that you like then refer you to the valve body that goes wit that trim kit.
