You must have oakleaf hydrangeas and blueberries. The OHs are my favorite shrub, even though they occasionally get some winter damage here in NoVA. The leaves are striking, the shrubs flower before the h. macrophyllas even think about opening up, and they are still in bloom, 6 weeks or more later. Great fall color. Leaves hang on in the winter though and look very sad. No insect or fungus problems. They wilt a little at midday if they're in a lot of sun. Blueberries are not the world's most attractive shrubs, though the leaves get bright fall color. They have an open habit and sparse foliage. The branches are generally upright except when the fruit is ripening, and then they arch toward the ground. The wood is brittle and bits break off readily when you're trying to pick. Flowers are insignificant. But (BUT!) blueberry pie is very tasty, as are blueberry sorbet, blueberry muffins, blueberry pancakes, blueberry syrup - you get the picture. You want at least two shrubs, but those two will keep you supplied with fresh berries for weeks and you'll have enough left to freeze. No insect or fungus problems, but Japanese beetles will sometimes damage fruit. Not a big deal most years, as far as I can tell - certainly not the kind of ruination that JBs inflict on roses.

Oh Boy. It sounds like you mean to say, they eat everything. Someone please tell me that's not true! In the back of my mind, I think you are right username. I'd find a stray here and there on other plants, one on a marigold, one on my sumac (but I don't think it had eaten the sumac). I won't give up tho! I've winter sowed some of the stuff on the list and will keep searching. LOL, I like the idea of recommending their favorites to my neighbor, the one I don't like, who has asked me for gardening advice. She'll have a virtual forest of zinnias and dahlias this year! LOL! (Just kidding.)

Any "GOOD" nursery will order in items that they don't necessarily carry. If they want your business they will do it for you. I have only 2 nurseries within 1/2 hour of my house and both are willing to order me native plants, shrubs and trees even though they don't carry them. It usually takes my nurseries about 1 week to get the items in from their supplier.

Why is it restricted if it is native? The native range is greatly influenced by glacial activity. Can you share sources for native azaleas? I would begin HERE All the planets lined up for me this year and I got good germination. Seed capsules collected in October, let them dry slightly and shake the seed out. Sow seed as shown here and put them outside for winter. They germinate following April. Deciduous azaleas in particular only have one flush of growth so they are VERY slow to get to saleable size. Species azaleas like this are not profitable for most nurserymen to bother with.
