The nature of the large leaves would make the plant sprawl of a sort since naturally it is a low growing plant. Those leaves that appear from time to time straggly, worn out, should be removed to encourage new growth. This plant does like its water often--less in winter--but should drain well. Its leaves will fold at night suggesting the "Prayer" nickname. Its actually conserving moisture. When the leaves fold at night, then open in daylight, it is signifying it is being given sufficient light. The treatment you are providing does indicate the plant should do well.

Leigh, even though smaller plants look pretty growing under tall trees, it usually causes problems. Maranta (prayer plant) doesn't need the room/space growing with your Ficus, which is probably in a large pot. I agree with the above posters, repot back to its original pot. I wouldn't cut roots unless they're dead. Remove brown/yellow leaves by clipping off w/scissors. Don't pluck. Marantas aren't the easiest plants to grow. BTW, more harm is done washing roots than helping. Most roots don't like being disturbed, (unless a plant is bug infested.) You mentioned the outside trees changed light conditions. Are you saying there isn't as much sun? Or too much? A/C dries the air. Is it possible placing your plant outside (if warm enough) in a super shady spot? If not you can use a humidity tray by adding pebbles atop the saucer, keeping it filled with water. (for humidity) I'd continue misting..Whatever, don't water or fertilize at night when leaves fold. Fill an old jug, cleaned milk container, fill w/water. Chlorine evaporates. Let sit at least 24 hours. Maranta's have shallow roots, so shallow containers work great, but whatever shape it's current pot was, if not too small where roots are growing on top and out of drainage holes, pot back to the original. Never let Prayer plants sit in muddy soil. I want to add, Marantas and Ficus have different care requirements. Ficus need a lot more sun. Ficus are given more and different fertilizers. I don't think you killed your Prayer Plant, but take action ASAP. Remove from Ficus pot. Add to the original or a similar size pot. Plastic seems to work best. If kept inside, place atop a tray. Mist, let soil dry between waterings. Use a semi-well-draining soil. Remove dead growth. Place in a bright, no direct south or west area. Good luck, Toni

I have 2 - one (variegated)is right on an east windowsill and one is about a foot from the same east window. The variegated one in the windowsill does almost completely die back (I say almost because it some years will hold onto a leaf or two) and the other one, though it doesn't completely die back, does look quite 'scraggly' this time of year with just a few leaves. I just leave them where they are and only water enough to prevent the roots from completely drying out, as too much water and the somewhat cold temperatures near that window would rot the roots. In the late winter to early spring, new growth resumes and that's when I begin watering more. The variegated one has some beautiful 'pink' hues to the new growth when it resumes.

Take a cutting if firm new growth apply 0.1% IBA (rooting hormone) stick in well drained soil ... rooting time2-3 weeks. avid misting if possible.... use 2 cuttings per 3" pot There will be some additional growth from the basal shoots.
