Help! why my kalanchoe flapjack skinny and wrinkled??water issue?
Comments (8)The cold weather, if the house the heater and perhaps lack of air circulation. It likes it warm. It doesn not like peat moss, and gathers mosture from the air at night. Don't leave by an open winder. Change the soil to dry soil, with a lot of coarse sand mixed into very little orchid bark, I live in the far West, I have African Weather, mine does fine year round, Do not mist them. If you are going to water,Then water thoroughly, the not again until the soil, not peat moss dries out. When you get a plant always change the soil. The western wholesale houses ships in peat so they won't dry out on the trip. Use a Cactus mix add in coarse washed construction sand at a ratio of 40% and only 10 % red wood bark or oak leaf. 50% perlite or pumice. Kalanchoe cannot grow in cold unless with other plants around them, they do not like harsh Eastern temps. Most Kalanchoe are from Madagascar. Has it outgrown it's pot? Comments (7)I am lucky enough to be able to PIG my plants (plant in the ground). FWIW, I have found that those PIG plants multiply better. I started with 4 plants - here they are blooming. The one on the far left is nearing 4 feet tall. You can see pups around the bottom. As it aged and the flowers faded, more babies formed on the stalk. You can see babies below, too. BTW - bees love these flowers. And now I have tons of plants. With every plant that blooms I get more and more pups. This is part of them on my landscape island. They are all the red plants in this picture. You can certainly pot them up or trade with friends. I love this plant! You have a beauty and yours will perform well for you, too. Oh - mine are quite green in the wet summer and quite red in my dry winter. Comments (11)That could be what's going on tiny leaves could be forming and they start to absorb the old leaves. Your little guy is off by a 2-3 months, but I've had confused Lithops. Usually they bloom first. Should be dormant now. Just let it do it's thing:). Like I said rot is when you need to worry. You clearly do not have that:). I know as a plant mom you want to do all these things for them when they don't look perfect, but Lithops don't need any fuss. As long as you don't water to much they go along fine. I swear I bet they could go without water for like 2 years. I would never try thus, but I bet they could. They absorb very last drop of their old leaves. Until the old leaves turn to paper:)....See MoreWrinkled jade leaves
Comments (26)Thank you! I added a sloping floor leading to the drainage hole (which has an insect screen covering it) to all planters and repotted, adding even more grit. I will keep them in the shade for a while and test with a skewer before watering. Hopefully this helps. Otherwise, I will revisit making a new mix. I am still a little unsure about the screening advice I received. When I first screened my Floor Dry through 1/8", I lost nearly 70%. I was told I could go back and screen again through the 1/16" I gained a ton back but maybe it is now too small and thus falls to the bottom, retaining too much water... All plants have been showing new growth but if I continue to notice wrinkled leaves, I will reassess the mix. I did screen perlite through the 1/8" and of course only saved 30% of the bag. I will look for orchid bark to since most of my reptibark ended up being too big and I've yet to find a solution for that... Thanks again! We are so happy to finally leave the world of renting -- especially since our mortgage will be less than our rent!...See More2rch LL
