The male quick connect screws into the end of the hose.

Thanks. I do know that...but this particular adaptor will not push into my faucet. It's the faucet connection which is important.

What I would ideally like is the specific adaptor that should work - a link would be great.

Whenever I shop for almost anything I start at Amazon. Even if I don't intend to buy there it gives me pictures, marketing names and brand names and price ranges.

Minutes ago at the top of their page on

"hose connector fittings" a really nice looking 'Nelson 50336 Brass Hose Quick Connectors Set, Male and Female by Nelson' pops up first. There seem to be a few hundred more. [They say 17,000 more but after the first few dozen they usually start duplication and down about item 100 they drift off into related items.] For example of staying of thread, 'Shop-Tek / C-H 3 Way Quick Connect Air Hose Splitter coupler Manifold, CAHQC3A' about four pages down is pretty enough to be artwork even though I would probably never buy it. Now I must erase my history before my wife sees that one. ｡◕‿◕｡

On the pipe side, the quick connect has a collar, slide that collar to the right, hold, insert male quick connect, release collar.

take the last fitting off the house pipe .. where the white teflon tape is sticking out ... and take it to a local full service hardware store.. and tell the dude there you need to attach that to a common hose ...

if she can not give you the single piece you need ... then ask for both the male and the female parts ...

buy some more teflon tape if you dont have any ...

too bad the carpet guy at the bigboxstore.. was stymied by a common hose connection issue ...

more and more.. im finding the good old fashioned hardware store.. is worth the minimal increase of cost.. to get service ...

should that not be an option.. google up irrigation stores online.. and contact one of them ...

If you didn't care about quick connect, you could also just remove the female quick connect fitting (it's screwed on with teflon tape beneath it). Then you could attach the leader hose as you would normally by screwing it on, making sure you've got a rubber washer in good condition.

There are different brands of quick connect hardware. I'm not sure they're standardized, so ideally you want a male and female of the same brand. If it were me, and I wanted quick connect (and assuming I couldn't determine the brand of the female connector that's on there now), I'd get a set like the Nelson 50336 one mentioned above. I'd remove the existing female connector, screw on the one from the Nelson set, and then screw the male connector to the leader hose.

One trouble with quick connects is that you now have three places where leaks can happen: the quick connect itself, which relies on a rubber O-ring that can wear out, and then where the male and female connectors screw on to the faucet and the hose. If you don't need to disconnect the hose reel very often, it might make more sense to not use a quick connect at all.

Thanks all for your input. I'm going to double check how I was attempting to fit this in on the weekend, and if that doesn't work, head back to a local hardware store, at least better informed. I must admit when I first tried it, I was in a rush and kind of just cursing it didn't seem to be working, so it might just be me, ha! Slow down and live, as my father says...

the last pic is poor ... separate one of the two pieces ... screw it into the hose ...

go to the house fitting ... pull the gnurled part back towards the on/off thingee ... insert hose end.. release gnurled part ... is it attached??

you may need teflon tape on the hose side.. if it works ...

REPORT BACK ASAP ... inquiring minds need to know ...

Brass connects to brass. Are the male connectors plastic? It is hard to tell in the picture. So what you need are male brass connectors, preferable the same brand as the connector you already have on the pipe. (In my very limited experience, while plastic ones don't cross companies, brass ones do. However, better safe than sorry.)

Success! Sorry it took me so long to update this thread. Turns out, it was mostly my incompetence trying to fit that connector; once I did it slowly and did the proper "hold, insert, release" as Jim Mat spelled out above, it did connect. today was my first test run, turning on the water. And no leaks either - except a very slow drip.

I may look into looking at getting more high end brass one, as mad_gallica suggested. And over the next few weeks I really have to give the whole thing a good test run - having the hose reel setup now involves these multiple hoses and connections - and lots of room for break downs each step of the way. Not as simple as I remember growing up :-)

i gave up on these things years ago ... mostly because.. when you think about it.. you have a large pipe ... what is that coming out of the ground.. one inch or 5/4 quarters ... god knows what in mm .. lol...

and then you choke it off.. with a 1/4 inch fitting ... whatever that small nipple was on the quick release part ...

for most of us ... that probably doesnt really matter ... but if you had 400 feet of hose.. you might start to wonder.. why you had no pressure at the end ...

IME, the slow drip may be resolved by switching out the hose washer as someone above suggested.

i dont have time to go read back .. but teflon tape will solve most irrigation connection leaks ... cheap.. simple to apply .. unless you are canadian ...and then nothing is simple.. and they probably banned it anyway ... rotflmbo ...

unless of course.. if the washer is bad to start with ... tape isnt going to solve anything ...

Thankfully, Teflon tape has yet to be banned here, and if it were, it's just a short drive to the border where I can get the good stuff! Anyway, I gave the pipe a good wrap with the tape...and no more drip.

So, everything is working perfectly now. Thanks all. And you will love this...yesterday while I was poking around in my basket of outdoor tool odds and ends, what do I find at the bottom? A set of BRASS male/female quick connectors! I just had to have a good chuckle over that one, after all that drama. People have been pushed over the edge for less :-)

Well, under the category of you can never know enough about hose connector fittings, I was interested to note this discussion regarding the problems of using different metals.

divergent metals .. remove once in a while ...

i bet using the teflon tape i suggested would avoid or at least delay this issue ...

also in the cold north.. think about what you might remove for winter storage ... that alone is one on off cycle ... we arent talking about the soldered parts ... you do store your hoses for winter.. dont you???
