Comments (1)You're out in the desert/sunset zone 12? If it is still hot in the day time there, I'd suggest waiting a bit later into the fall. In general dividing perennials such as Coreopsis is best done before it gets too cold, but not when the divisions will stress from heat and loss of roots. I generally cut back the foliage by at least half to get them to not dry out too quickly from loss of roots. Comments (2)I've divided them mostly in the fall. Most of the time the stems get broken when i'm digging them up, so this way i'm not losing blooms for the season. And i haven't always waited until the foliage dies down - i just do it after they've finished blooming....See Moretiming on dividing beardeds
Comments (1)Hmmm, this was written in 1923? Maybe this notion has been disproven since then. In the spirit of scientific experimentation, however, I think I'll try to transplant and divide half of my plants just after flowering to see what happens. I'll report back on results.
