Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is probably a Snowberry Clearwing. It was quite small, about the size of a carpenter bee, and I think you can see a suggestion of black legs in some of the photos. I really am beyond thrilled at the results of my first year butterfly gardening. I still don't have that many host plants in place, but I do have a lot more nectar plants, and I'm seeing a number of species for the first time. Not only the first time in my yard, but some are new to my life list as well. Of course, I'm a complete newbie, so that shouldn't be too surprising. Still, a spicebush swallowtail and an American lady are quite a handsome reward for one year of effort. Not to mention a whole lot more monarchs than I have seen here in years. If only they would leave me some eggs! Liz

Thank you. Vesfl, Lavender Lassie is not a climber, but forms a sprawling shrub here. I keep it heavily pruned back to control width. It's 6 feet wide, but wants to grow wider. It does not grow very tall, however. It's about 5 1/2 to 6 feet tall. The color is medium pink, not very vibrant however. I'll post more photos of it. Gertrude Jekyll is 4-5 feet tall here. I use a stake or mini-trellis to help support it as it arches toward a pathway, but it does not climb. Thanks Ingrid. I see this little guy in the garden almost every day. My caterpillars seem to have left. There were 2 still here yesterday. I see small monarchs today but they are from cocoons elsewhere that I haven’t seen. We have so many goldfinches!!! Every year they peep peep chatter chatter in the cone flowers stuffing on seed heads. I don’t see a lot of butterfles on my Butterfly weed bushes even though they are loaded with flowers for months. I have a huge variety of bees and the sedums are loaded down. My Baby Joe pye has had dried flowers for quite awhile now I am moving it next year to more sun.
