DIY with 2 jobs and young children: how?
Comments (16)No kids. But we both worked 2 jobs in the years immediately following the construction of our home in 1991. We have done virtually ALL the finish work in our home, and all the landscaping ourselves. How? We put together a list of what needed to be accomplished to get us on the road to "finished". And every day that we didn't work TWO jobs we came home and did something to chip away at the mountain of work that had to be done. I vividly recall coming home from my "straight" job, taking off the skirt, hose, and heels and priming sheetrock or sanding primed sheetrock. I primed woodwork before dinner and did more of it after dinner. We worked every "day off" and every "weekend". It was relentless and we're still picking away at the finer details. You have to have a LIST and you have to priortize the things that must be finished first. You have to figure out how to keep the kids amused/out of your hair. I know this is going to sound "mean" and I don't want it come across that way, but how the hell do you think people who crossed the prairies in covered wagons managed? you do WHAT YOU HAVE TO to get done that which you want to see done. It's not easy and it often requires great sacrifice. I remember the discussion about giving up our "second jobs"... we took in boarders to continue the capital needed to get things done at the rate we wanted to see them finished. And we kept room-mates until we retired our mortgage. I can tick off 3 friends, all single mothers, who have done the same thing; they've had long term boarders with kids and they've communally addressed childcare needs. They've been creative and made tough choices. "Modern pioneer women". You assess your situation. You list the things that have to be addressed. You set priorities. And you work your asses off, learning to satisfy yourselves with the smallest goals. You learn to "make do"....See MoreShare your 'living through kitchen reno' tips
Comments (15)First, keep your eye on the prize. A wonderful new kitchen. Forget about today's food. Knee deep into week 3. Painters tomorrow on Mon and Tues, cabinets come on Wed, appliances arrive Thurs. I am guessing it will be a week from Friday til it is 85% done. Havent picked out countertop yet. Have the sink, faucet and soap dispenser, but keeping my options open re the sink. I thought about this today. Have a lot of plastic grocery bags and rolls of paper towels. Food is not a big deal for us and we have had pizza once and gyros twice. I Cook very little, but we are empty nesters and dh only eats a sandwich for dinner. So I buy deli tuna salad and reheatable double cheeseburgers, toss the buns, low carb, big lettuce containers, deli cheese, almonds, grapes, bananas. It's relatively short term anyway. Rotisserie chicken. Unprocessed stuff. Deli stuff. Cabbage and chicken salad. Lean cuisines. Nuke eggs or beaters in sprayed mugs. Have microwave and fridge. I precooked a bunch of chicken breasts, plain, which are still untouched in the freezer. We don't, nor do we care to, have wonderful dinners every night. Dh goes out to a nice lunch a few times a week. If I still had starving teens, I'd have milk and cereal, "the great (thursday nite) cereal buffet and get sushi for dd. raw veggies and spinach dip. Simple and plain. Home brewed and store bought Starbucks. wine. it is ok. So happy about the kitchen our food is minor. The kitchen is a little miracle. Again, plastic bags(save 'em beforehand), paper towels, cooking spray, paper plates, and whatever are your own personal necessities and convenience items....See MoreNeed opinions for a major reno project
Comments (4)Hi Live_wire_oak, Thanks for your opinion. Part of me thinks this is crazy but for some reasons, we can't stop thinking about this project. I don't have a picture of the house and can,t printscreen from google maps because it's got trees hiding the house. This is, according to our drawings, what the front of the house would look like with extension: It is currently symmetrical so picture the right side of the house being exactly like the left part. I was in fact concerned with the front extension interfering with the foursquare charm. However, the idea came from a few houses in the area that have this exterior look: Also, by enlarging the den, we would be enlarging the bedroom that is above the den. Budget wise, we could spend up to $175k for the remodeling. Even with this investment, it would still be cheaper than buying a turnkey house (houses around here are really expensive). Small extensions are common in this area and many have included a small eating area in the kitchen. Some neighbours have also enclosed part of their front porch to add more square footage....See MoreGetting ready for puppy. Any pearls of wisdom
Comments (51)Hi all, I did not have Wi-Fi for the last few days as I am helping my mother downsize to a smaller apartment and we have not set up the Wi-Fi yet. I am staying with a friend and he finally found his pass code for his Wi-Fi. Thank you for the information on toothbrushing and treats. I will have to look some of them up as I'm not familiar with a couple varieties. The one puppy class recommended Hot dogs and cheese as well. I gave up hotdogs for myself a few years ago, so we'll have to figure out how not to feel funny feeding the puppy hot dogs. I originally wrote a longer message but accidentally clicked on the link in Gardenweb and it took me off the page and I lost my longer message. Thanks again for all your help. We pick up the puppy next weekend. Stay tuned!...See MoreRelated Professionals
