Do you have any 'fighter' plants?
Comments (2)I do have a jasmine (Madagascar) that I grew from seed about 4 years ago and (GASP!) it hasn't succumbed (yet) to the almost freezing temps that I had it in in the basement. I took it and put it in our only heated room and it's stem is still alive, but the leaves look pretty bad. It should hopefully perk up this summer. Of course it hasn't flowered yet, not sure if it will or when. I'm so impatient! I can't believe it's not dead, I haven't been able to get any house plants to survive for that long, thanks to first getting a virus from a plant from Lowes (had to throw out all my tropicals grown from seed), then moving to the boonies we have heating problems in the winter which usually does away with most plants....See MoreDo you have any of the same plants you had in the beginning?
Comments (28)Sorta comes down to how long of a "beginning" one is considering, for me. My very first 2 orchids are long gone. One was a NOID den that eventually died, and the other was a NOID phal that I sold or gave away at some point. I do still have 2 divisions of a NOID miniden (which is planted in wet peat in a bog terr) I bought at Lowes yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaars back when the BBS carried them frequently. That purchase was a year or two after that of the phal and den mentioned previously. All predated the first time I attended an OS meeting or even knew of events like orchid shows. :) W/ the exception of the aforementioned miniden, my oldest plants [if I stretch "beginning" to include my first orchid show] would be a Pot Hoku Gem 'Superspots' and Blc Blazing Treat. Both of which I've had for probably ten or more years now....See MoreCharles de Mills, I love you. Do you have any friends?
Comments (23)Not that anyone is still following this, but this was me (which.chick) and I still have Charles de Mills and he still blooms amazingly every year and I still love him. Mme. Plantier died some years back in a hard winter. I shovel-pruned Stanwell Perpetual because he just looked sad, year after year, and it was depressing. *sigh* Fantin Latour powdery mildews (it's very humid at my house) and does not bloom every year for me. Just... not doing well. I have a friend who's about 200 feet lower than me in elevation with better sun and I'm relocating Fantin there. I've waited long enough for him to settle in and it just isn't going to happen. But, Ispahan is trouble free, HUGE, and produces hundreds of flowers, every single year. (Probably would like a trellis of some sort, but doesn't have one. I have a 3' fence around the base and he sort of fountains out of that. I hack off about 6' a year before winter to keep the canes tidy.) Never sick. Never dies from freezing. Has good clean foliage ALL SUMMER. Just... big and strong grower. Two thumbs up for that. I couldn't source either of the Belles back then, but if I move Fantin Latour, I will try again this spring....See MoreDo any of you have any Coulmbine seed?
Comments (20)I winter sowed all I had, and have never tried them before from seed. Only one yellow I had collected from my own plant, and just wanted to see if the seeds would germinate. I'm grateful for the other columbine thread where we were cautioned they may take a very long time so I won't get impatient and throw them out too soon, will have to water them once the tops come open, probably shouldn't let them dry out if it doesn't rain. Those lovely red ones (Swallowtail) were so different, not sure what red you're talking about, but they were only 10 seeds/pkt, and I passed them up, have been extravagant enough as it is. Now if I have good fortune, I will have several varieties of columbines and am not keen on them crossing, would welcome it for some. But you never know. I don't know how much of a tendency they have to cross or revert. One of my yellows, not the whole plant, just one part, had some red in it, every year, didn't care for it. If say my Nora Barlows cross with Blue Star or some odd kind I got, I would probably save seeds but don't know if they would stay true to form or not. I don't even know if they do cross if too different....See MoreIris S (SC, Zone 7b)
