Can't decide between Bosch and KA Dishwasher
Comments (15)Besides what everybody else has already said, here are a couple of other thoughts. Consumer Reports testing lists the Bosch SHX555 as having "excellent" ratings for washing and energy use, and "very good" ratings for noise and what CR thinks is "ease of use." There are ratings for KichenAid KUDS30 models, but no KUDS35 models. It may well be that the only difference between the "30" and "35" models is which retailers sell them. Anyway, the KUDS30 models were rated as excellent for washing, very good for energy use, average for noice, and very good for ease of use. CR lists the Bosch as having a 110 minute cycle time and the KA KUDS30 models as having a 115 minute cycle time. My Bosch SHE55 was similarly rated by CR but, in practice, usually runs about 100 minutes. (Both the KA and Bosch seem to have sensors that adjust cycle time for water turbidity, so YMMV). My SHE55 model, which I've had for 8 months, has racks that are designed differently that the ones on the Bosch I had for the previous fifteen years. The racks in the SHE55 (and, I believe in the SHX55) models have a different layout from the old Bosch, although they also have adjustable height and rows of tines that can fold down. Not everybody likes this layout. It took me some time adjust I saved the racks from my old Bosch and, once in a while, I sometimes swap in the old bottom rack for a particular load. IIRC, the current KA models use a more standard rack design, albeit with some flexibility. So, one thing I would suggest for the OP is, if you are still stuck in the making your decision, go back to the store with some of your plates and glasses to see how yours will fit. One final thing. There is a strident debate about the safety of some Whirlpool dishwasher products, which includes it's KitchenAid models. There are reports of a small number of them suffering circuit board burn-outs with some those even catching fire. Apparently, there have been several housefires attributed to the DWs. Whirlpool has denied any product defects, while numbers of enraged owners are lobbying the CPSC and blogging, and newspapers have been publishing some stories. Do a web search using "kitchenaid + dishwasher + fire" for more info on this debate. Also try substituting "whirlpool" for "kitchenaid." There were a couple threads here at GW on the subject last summer and fall, as well. I remember one of them was about whether to let your dishwasher run when you are sleeping or going out for the day. Comments (17)I've never heard anyone refer to any appliance brand as a "luxury" brand except for you ss: always glad to oblige: Off-GW: Luxury kitchen appliances from google. Note that some of these are perfectly legitimate uses of luxury. Others want to sell you or point you explicitly to "luxury appliances" - a term you contend I have coined. Those are the ones that are germane here. On-GW: One particular link I picked up. Others can also be found. I bought the Miele La Perla because I wanted THE BEST. Sorry, I'm an engineer. You'll have to define "THE BEST". ut I do know that you pay extra for thoughtfulness of design, technology, and function. And how much do you pay for the "Cheese" cycle? :-) My La Perla is a pleasure to use, makes the kitchen look striking, and cleans like a champ. I'm really glad to hear that your machine is washing well again. Was it not you who was posting a daily update on what was left on your dishes in every wash? Perhaps I've got my dishwasher complainants mixed up. To me it was worth it, And really, that is all that is important. You want to be able to strike a balance between feeling short-changed and feeling like a purchase is overkill. I'm sure the DW was "THE BEST" for you. To me, at $2K+, it would have to polish my silverware and put the dishes away in the kitchen to be worth it. 'Coz otherwise, I gotta say, I prefer the uniform, displayless face of my flat panel DW, water parameters entering my house doesn't really change and my machine functions very well with the water feed I do have, and I've not had a problem with cleaning or drying. The bottom spray arm is plastic, True. And that is bothersome because ??? and the various plastic components inside the machine had such rough edges that I almost cut myself at the showroom. Wow. You must have skin like a dream. I just went over my DW interior looking for someway to be injured and couldn't find one. There is nylon covering metal on the racks. The arm is plastic but where you could have poked your fingers to find rough edges, I can't imagine. The soap dispenser, the wheels and the supports for the flip-down rows are plastic but I can't find any place to cut yourself on. Forget the DW, I just want to know what moisturizer you use. Anyhow, you clearly know more about dishwashers than I do if you can be impressed or unimpressed by the interior by virtue of a static scan. The primary parameters that I go by are dynamic and operational - quietude, cleaning capability, drying capability and longevity. The one question I can't answer just now is the last one. I'm not in the business of peddling any appliance brand so I couldn't care less if the OP buys a Bosch or buys any other brand. I have a Miele VC and Miele w/d so I know Miele makes good products. I'm sure others do a good job too. I'm just citing my favorable experience with my particular 500-series Bosch dishwasher for the poster - I don't know and don't think i would have liked the Bosch 300 series (rack configurations and quietness govern this) and I don't know that I would have cared for some of the gimmicry of the 800 series....See MoreBosch 18" dishwasher....???
Comments (27)Great minds think alike! I was just thinking about you tonite. My new job is keeping me off this site...well, most of the computer now! I don't like that! Don't want to stop the momentum! Is that you? Love it! I believe I recall something about Mr. Clean in another thread awhile back, not sure if they were referring to you or not, tho! I went to another store this past Saturday & they carried the VAH's, as well. I think the only thing I don't care for, is they don't appear to have the mesh filter type things over the opening. It's just completely open & I think that looks cheap. Apparently they are very easy to clean...well, the mechanism is! You just throw it in the DW. But, I can see where the inside of the hood would be hard to clean. Anyway, still haven't had enough time to concentrate on that right now. I called Tevor last Friday, I believe, & he couldn't offer me any great deal. He returned my call while I was at my new job & it was hard to talk to him, so couldn't try to wheel & deal! I did, however, find a 30" Cap. Cul. from a place in Dallas for $4K! That is, however, if I get the fridge, hood, & DW from them. They don't carry Bosch, but I believe he said he'd throw in the Miele for $1000. Not 100% sure on that, but believe so. I just wasn't going to do that at the time but now I'm thinking maybe I will. I do have to pay taxes, being in Texas! That bites! I was on Ebay tonite - you got me hooked! - & there was a miele on there. I want to say they were asking $1K, but $180 for shipping. If that's the case, I'll get it from some other place that'll give that to me on a package deal, & hopefully get it for $1k...or better, less! On the ebay listing, you can make an offer to see if they accept it, but if I do that, I'm going low & more than likely they won't take it. Nothing ventured, nothing gained! I'll let you know how that goes! Good to hear from you. I'll be back sooner than later. Still more questions!!...See MorePlease share experience with Wolf, Thermador, Bosch, Miele gas cooktop
Comments (9)I'll share my experience with a 800 series Bosch 5 burner cooktop. Although mine is a 30 inch but, hopefully some info will help. My salesman told me that Thermador was the same as Bosch in the engineering (same company) except of course those star shaped hobs. I have two 5500 BTU burners (simmer) and that is what they are mostly good for or reheating something in a small pot. Two 10000 BTU which are fine for most everything and one 16000 biggie centered in the middle that requires a large pan even on low or the flames are licking up the side. But it is wonderful for bringing large pots to a boil or anything else you might wish to do in a large pan or pot. Being that mine is on a 30 inch platform the control knobs are kind of close to the two front burners. Perhaps that won't be an issue with the 36". I find that the stainless finish cleans up best with those clorox (or store brand) kitchen wipes, great for baked on mess and grease. The grates are continuous and wash up in the dishwasher wonderfully. I didn't go with a super huge exhaust like some will recommend over in appliances. My three speed Zephyr 290 CFM is more than I need even for frying probably because it is vented to the outside (only way to go). I rarely use the highest speed. One thing I do regret is not making the capture space (distance between cabinets flanking cooktop) wider, but didn't find the info until it was too late). There was a pro on these boards (wish I could remember who to give credit where it is do) that said a 30' cooktop requires minimum 36" space and a 36" would require 42" and so on. Hope I got that correct. That is not a direct quote, but you could probably search these boards and find it. I realized how much nicer that hearth area would be AFTER my install. So back to the Bosch. I've had it for going on two years now and love it. I use it everyday for meals and lots in the summers for blanching veggies to be frozen. I've used it a few times for large gatherings and the burners can get a little crowded but handle placement is key. The price difference was the clincher for me as the Thermador was way more money. The only thing I don't have are those fancy star shaped hobs....See Moretazena
