So, is it still good? It's totally unopened, still sealed, with the expiry date of Dec. 2016. Is it still good? I looked at StillTasty and couldn't find a listing for sealed, sliced prosciutto. I know I could open it and take a sniff, but if it's good, I'll want to use it all at once so plans are for tomorrow evening, to open the package.
Before tomorrow evening, does anyone have any info, ideas, suggestions other than the sniff test?
I agree, even though it's cured, it's still a meat product and it's 4 months past expiration. I tend to live on the edge where food dates are concerned, but even I wouldn't go there.
Uh, oh. I just used a package of prosciutto from Trader Joe's. It didn't smell, but did not taste very good, either. I used it to wrap melon slices for an appetizer. Almost no one ate them. When I ate one, it had an odd mouth feel. My husband ate the rest. and the remainder of the package, a day later, was chopped and fried a bit for a cream sauce topping.
No one got sick, but still....I did not check the date.
Linnea, I'm glad you didn't get ill, and hopefully you won't. I can't imagine even considering eating a meat product that's been refrigerated 4 months past the expiration date, even cured and/or smoked meat. Hopefully yours wasn't that old!
