Wood Floor type Color suggestions, please?

Hi!

Quick facts: contractor prefers Armstrong/Bruce wood, but we can order whatever. The floor will be the same throughout kitchen/DR/LR, we will be tearing tile up.

I like wide planks/distressed wood, but - trendy?

I don't like the orange I have now- I like dark floors but my house is obviously tiny, so...

Hi there, Congrats on the remodel! Your choices so far look great. As far as hardwood flooring goes, Bruce and Armstrong are great name brands. We've installed many of these floors with long lasting success. If you want a "darker" floor, I'd suggest you stay in the cool tones (away from the oranges and reds you dislike) and don't go overly dark just because we don't want the space to look smaller than it is. Bruce has some beautiful pre-finished darker hardwoods for you to choose from. I'd suggest one with some texture, mainly because kitchens are high traffic areas and the darker the floor, the more you see on it. But with some hand scrapping, etc, it will eliminate a lot of the every day wear and tear that may drive you crazy.

The link I added is from the Bruce line, and I think that this color, along with the light grey counters and the white cabinets would pair really well... It's also not too too dark.

Whatever you choose, I'd suggest something with a bit of texture.

This is a solid red oak, not refinished, but its a nice medium color, and the busy graining of red oak act just like a textured floor would when it comes to hiding discrepancies.

view of other direction- these windows will provide the majority of the light for the space, and do get a lot of light

We are going prefinished. any specific color recommendations for this space? I want to warm up the kitchen without using any warm colors, lol.

Alisonn, love your room! And happy to hear that "painting everything white" wasn't the consensus here. Our new home has a lot of wood, with a cathedral wood ceiling in the great room. All I ever got when asking for suggestions on colors or decorating, was "paint it all white".....not necessarily always on this forum. I agree with aktillery and could see a muted olive green leaning toward gray tones shade in your room. Not necessarily what your husband would like. Maybe you could suggest to him to bring COLOR into the room through a bold rug etc.

This is really funny, because it's like I'm you in some alternate universe. I have a small 15 x 8 kitchen, hardwoods throughout my 1941 Cape Cod, and the main entrance off the garage comes into the kitchen (so dirt is always getting tracked in), and we have a dog and a kid - so my situation is almost exactly the same as yours. Coincidentally, for a while I considered Blue Pearl for my galley kitchen (it's very pretty stone!) To go with it, I found a pretty gray 13 x 13 porcelain floor tile at Daltile. That tile was called Veranda, and there were two different shades that would have worked with the Blue Pearl. There were several other gray floor tiles, too, and I think they all come in other sizes. I was going for gray because my LR and DR are gray, but Blue Pearl is pretty gray too. And I think gray will help hide dirt, and you can use gray grout, or a darker charcoal grout, which is convenient since it's going to turn gray anyway. I thought it solved a lot of problems at once. I probably will still end up with a gray floor. Oh, and I was a going to lay the tile in a brick pattern horizontally staggered, or you could do the diagonal. Either way, the room looks wider, supposedly.

I'm no color expert, but have you tried BM Wickham gray HC171? We used that in our house and in some lights it reads blue, other times of day a light gray. It might be a good middle ground between your gray and hubby's blue.

IMO you have enough gray if you look at the previous owners furniture that green color looks awesome with those floors so I would do a very soft gray/ green it will look good with the floors and not be a big gray box. I would suggest some more grown up art on the walls and save those for a diffent space and make sure when you hang the new art it is hung so the center of the work is at eye level which is usually about 65”

Thanks so much! I asked my contractor for a price on the hand scraped, we will,see what he comes back with. In the mean time I am considering this, on the lower end, it looks loke it might be close to your first pic, I really wish they had a larger sample though

If you have some existing flooring, why don't you add the same flooring in the new area and have it all site finished with a custom color?

I like Couture's first picture. Perhaps an Ebony stain lightened up with Natural would look good on in your area.

jfcwood, I'm getting a quote for that also- it's very thin though, so matching the thickness wouldn't be a great idea in a kitchen. Also they are one inch wide and top nailed. Basically I think it would cost almost the same and I'd need a transition strip anyway because I'd be going from 5/16's to 3/4's. I've had a few contractors and flooring guys advise against it, only one would give me a price for it. But I'm getting that price today so I'll keep you posted.

Makes perfect sense. I saw those top nails and suspected it might be the thin narrow stuff. Oddly enough there's another current post where someone has a similar looking floor with lots of top nails.

So back to your original question about distressed being trendy. It certainly is but the trend seems to have legs. At the very least I'd suggest getting something with enough surface thickness to sand out or perhaps get a wire brushed product rather than contoured or hand scraped. Armstrong has many things to pick from. Another reasonably priced option might be Somerset Classic. It comes in 3/4" thick solid in 2-1/4" and 3-1/4" wide and has a bit of surface grain texture or engineered in 3-1/4" and 5" wide. If you want to go wide it's probably better to use an engineered product.

mster425, it looks like your heading in the right direction with color. The pic you posted of your sample board does look much like my first pic, and I think that the cool brown tone will look great with the other colors you have going on in the kitchen. Be sure to let us know what you decide on, and post after pics!

I did! The work is still underway but these will give you an idea, sorry for the disaster zone. It's a prefinished oak similar to Jacobean stain.
