What to do on New Year's Eve?
Comments (28)Pretty much the usual crowd and usual fare, but my son and daughter in law came and brought one of his friends from law school. I'm thinking of switching to a duck and sausage gumbo next year because my son doesn't like seafood, one of our neighbors is allergic to it, and it doesn't make sense to go through all the shrimp-cleaning/stock-making work for stuff that some folks can't enjoy. Just as we were getting things ready for guests to arrive, we got a phone call. It was one of my son's best boyhood friends, the son of the neighbor who'd now in the retirement complex. He's living in upstate NY, managing a grocery coop and making biodiesel on the side. He called because he remembered drinking eggnog in the kitchen and wanted to reconnect with familiar voices and rituals....See MoreHave: Looking for Dormants for these EVs
Comments (5)Hi Jen & P-doctor: Thanks for responding. I emailed you directly, PD, regarding a trade, so will give you 'right of first refusal' on the lot. Jen, I will let you know if the trade with PD doesn't work out, then we can work out a trade. (FYI- I actually have IC and recently purchased a bigger clump of it. Will keep you posted!)...See MoreSigh...Golden Celebration has RRD
Comments (17)RRV is such a horrible way to lose a rose, but I suppose I'm just conditioned to overreact since the first rose I ever lost to it was my huge (HUGE! 30'x20' at least) City of York I had grown from my grandmother's plant. I was very sentimentally invested in it, and by the time I researched the problem and found it had RRV, it was way too far gone to even attempt to save it. Honestly, you can't imagine the trauma of removing a beloved rose that large....digging out the roots I (with the help of two brothers) ended up with a hole eight across and nearly four feet deep. I still have never replaced CoY, because as much as I miss it, another one just wouldn't be the same. But yes, I still grow roses, lol. (glutton for punishment) John...See MoreIs Golden Celebration a good idea?
Comments (68)I had heard this rose might get tall, but things don't usually get huge in my climate as it's just not that sunny, so I thought I'd try. However, rather than growing up, my two-year-old GC seems to be growing "out", like a wild thing... I have never quite seen a plant grow in every direction like this. When I stake it, branches tend to grow out sideways, then flop over, or flop, twist and grow upside down. Worse than any raspberry bush. Like a Clematis on steroids. It's in the back of a border, I can't seem to keep it from learning on, or hugging branches around its neighbors, and it grows fast. It's like The Stranger Things vines this year. Some shrubs like this start to grow straight-up better with time, is this one of those? Or will it need its own yard? Is there any kind of pruning that reigns this in? And how to do it? Pruning it after the first flush last year seemed to kill part of it off, which was surprising, so i don't want to go too hard on it....See MoreSylviaWW 9a Hot dry SoCal
