Advice re: how to keep young tree growing in specific direction
Comments (2)In bonsai, we like to keep trees short (or they wouldn't be bonsai), but since they insist on growing upward, what happens is that the tree is 'chopped' (cut back to wherever we want, providing enough buds or branches are left below for it to continue to thrive) and then take the highest remaining branch that's growing sideways and gently bend it upward, straight (without breaking it!) and splint it lightly to the top of the cut trunk. Eventually it will become the new leader and you can remove the tie (wire is often used to, but requires a little knowledge and is harder to do properly)....See MoreIs this tall, leafy plant a young tree?
Comments (6)Definitely an elm, probably a large-growing one (most are). Fruits are generally needed to positively identify wild species, in addition to those are many intentional hybrids, both old and new - and not fully represented in keys and descriptions. You can't count on someone coming up with a 100% reliable species identification based on seeing this picture on the internet. If it happens to be a comparatively distinctive kind that somebody suggests as a possibility then there you are, otherwise even unusually thorough and dedicated tree expert Arthur Lee Jacobson of Seattle, WA (author of NORTH AMERICAN LANDSCAPE TREES, TREES OF SEATTLE, PURPLELEAF PLUMS) cannot give airtight names to every elm tree he has encountered. And this is includes his home territory, probably the last stronghold (alas, no longer) of elms susceptible to Dutch Elm Disease and pretty much no longer represented by full-sized specimens elsewhere....See MoreLittle 1' tall fig 'tree', a whip with no branches,
Comments (3)Quamquat That wise person was correct. You have to provide moisture and some nutrient in the early years so the roots get well developed and cover more area and depth so it can reach out for collecting moisture and nutrients for its survival and growth. Then the growth in return helps the root system and the tree flourishes....See MoreVery young Monkey puzzle tree with one brown branch after summer
Comments (3)No, I just transplanted it without opening the root ball. I should have but I just wanted to put it in the bigger pot, in a hole the size of the smaller pot without disturbing anything and keeping its original potting mix to minimize the shock....See Moreheidirosser
