Beet Greens are edible raw, you can put them in smoothies, salads ect.

I think beet leaves are smoother and then to be smaller than chard leaves. Chard leaves can get very large with a thick stem. Swiss chard grown in high tunnels during the cold season can be sweeter than that grown in summer. They have a really nice flavor. I think beet leaves have a more earthy taste.The stems are also more narrow that chard stems. A really big chard stem almost reminds me of celery, but flatter.

I never put my vegetable seeds in the freezer from year to year and they produce fine! I fear it would kill them because most things are annuals.

Couple of misleading statements.

Most Swiss chard are green leaves with white or greenish stems. Any color in the stems other than green or white all depends on the specific variety planted.

Freezer storage is not required for any seeds and can be risky for many. All seed storage requires is dry and away from heat exposure.

Well understood that seed lifetime is extended at low temperatures and with low humidity. As noted, freezing can damage some seeds. Refrigeration never does. I keep my seeds in a doubled zip-lock bag in the fridge, with a few packets of dessicant. DO NOT open the zip-lock bag until the package has thoroughly warmed up, to avoid condensation.

It is sometimes cautioned NOT to refrigerate because humidity levels in the refrigerator can vary a lot. Zip-lock bags get around that, nicely.

Seed lifetime can be doubled or tripled in this way.

Thanks for that info DanInTheDirt, never thought about the humidity levels, I never put them in Zip-lock bags and they seem to germinate fine with very high germination rates.

uh these arent my veggies. I bought the produce from the local nursery.

I found out they have been doing this for couple of years. a little costly but organically grown. Unfortunately not using rainwater as of yet...

I trust their stuff more than supp organic from local Big BOX grocery...

These high tunnels are on land he bought or is leasing. recently.

not on the Nursery proper. but they do have lemons grown in their regular on site greenhouses.Wow was I surprised...

My strawberries need to be thinned again, really bad and in a hurry. I am still pulling up what I believe is "Pennyroyal" in my one strawberry bed.It was taking over. I am saving some of the Pennyroyal and hope to dry it....supposed to repel moths...

As has been said both beet and chard leaves are both perfectly palatable. Both are botanically speaking in the same genus and are easy to grow from seed. Buying transplants is not only more expensive than seeds but transplants are more likely to bolt than plants sown in situ. A gutter doesn't really have sufficient volume of soil to grow beets in unless it is at the very least about 6 inches deep and wide.
