Lol I posted the wrong picture. That Loquins Admiral is on aster ( nice guess too!!) Yeah we have been in the low 40's F for the past few weeks with more snow doubtful. While we can still get frost till nearly June I usually have to mow a few times in April. Yay! For spring! Wish I could access my hard drive with all my butterfly pictures. One almost feels warm looking at them. Oh well how about a skipper? Too melting days!! SCG

Hi Danielle, The Incarnata doesn't have a huge taproot (someone please correct me if I am wrong); last year I dug up my 6 1.5-year old clumps and they were just that - clumpy! Mine did not have a taproot, very easy to move. I don't see why they wouldn't do well in a 1-gal pot... although they get a little tall so floppage *might* be an issue. I started some Curassavica a year ago from seed and transplanted some to 1-gal pots that I kept inside to feed monarch cats I brought in. They took well to the pots - and even bloomed (sort of!) this winter! I just chopped them back a bit as they got a bit floppy, but now they look pretty lush. Just keep 'em watered well, as you probably know from your other container plantings. Hope that helps. Great photos btw! Love the kittens. :) Sandy

If I had already planted milkweeds grown from seed I'd leave them in place. You have a small enough area that if you wanted to, you could eradicate milkweed pretty easily, or you could control it simply by watching where it comes up each spring and removing the ones you don't want. That is the advantage of a small garden - you can monitor each plant personally, and control the aggressive ones by hand pulling, digging, etc. I would, in future summers, limit the milkweed to maybe 5 or 6 stems. This will be wnough to support a couple of caterpillars, but won't occupy too much space in the garden. You will learn to recognize the new shoots in the spring, and you can pull them up with some of the rhizome that in underneath and i think you'll have OK control.

No telling what happened to them. They may well have taken off to find a nearby place to attach themselves to. I very seldom find chrysalises on the milkweed. Many other things could have happened also...
