New Over-the-range microwave won't work under extra deep cabinet???

Hello,

Our kitchen (house built in 2006) was designed for an over-the-range microwave. This worked great until our Frigidaire microwave bit the dust a couple weeks ago. I'm finding that all of the current models of over-the-range microwaves no longer vent out the front and require a cabinet depth no more than 12 or 13 inches above the microwave. Our cabinets above are 18" deep. Does anyone know what to do in this situation? Thanks!

I"m not sure. I think if you have an actual vent (stove pipe), you just adjust the venting to work with it.

Here is a page from AJ Madison. These are at least 18" deep. You'd have to read the installation guides to see which one will work for you.

Vent outside possible? If not, put blocking against the wall and have the OTR microwave pulled forward. Or go with a regular range hood and put microwave somewhere else. 18" seems pretty deep for wall cabinets where you cook and prep. Are your counters deeper too?

How has that depth been for you? It seems like it would be very hard to cook and see into your pots/pans on the range. 15" depth is about as deep as I like to go on wall cabinets.

Terri, I think that 18" depth spec is to the handle. I've never seen an OTR microwave that deep. Most are around 15" to 16.5".

Thank you for responding ..my current stove is only 44 inches from the floor to the top of backguard and the microwave is 15 1/2 as it stands they are too close I think. The bottom of the microwave to the top of stove burner area is 14 inches. The new freestanding stoves are all mostly 47 inches and microwaves are all really about 15 inches. I have only seen one stove that has controls in front I think it is kitchen aid and has horrible reviews with regard to a fuse causing problems with self cleaning. I did not know that they made the thing for the back do they sell them at stores or on-line? Another alternative is to put microwave on the counter and do a hood over the stove..do you know if they require different wiring for that if I currently have the microwave with the vent built in?? Just b/c you cannot vent to the outside does not mean an OTR MW is fine. (1) An OTR MW does not cover all the burners adequately so it doesn't work well as a vent regardless of the exhaust type (exterior/recirculating). Even a recirculating has a charcoal filter at least...it will help with some odors. (2) There's the safety factor...and I find it hard to believe that someone 5'2" would find it comfortable and safe to use...I'm 5'10" and even I don't like them! (My sister has one and I've used them in rentals. My sister is 5'4" (I think) and I see her reaching up to use it...not safe, especially over her gas range!) (3) There's the workflow factor...if someone is working at the range/cooktop, they have to move aside if someone wants the use the MW...and not just once. They have to move when the food is put in, when the food is taken out, and, if necessary, each time the food is checked/stirred. If you have another place for the MW, I strongly recommend you put it elsewhere. The "ideal" location for most families is to have it on the periphery near the refrigerator so those not working in the kitchen looking for a snack won't get in the way of those who are working.

Typically the OTR manufacturer has that the upper cabinet that the OTR attaches to must be 30 inches above the range top. Most OTR's are 15-17 inches tall so that puts the bottom of the OTR between 13 and 15 inches away from the cooking surface. This puts the bottom of the microwave interior floor somewhere around 4.5 feet from the kitchen floor or about armpit to shoulder high for the average height person. When you start getting higher than shoulder high it becomes more dangerous for the person removing hot food from the m/w.

I have the same problem. Steam being exhausted when food is cooked in the microwave. If i turn the vent fan on while cooking food in the microwave, the steam does not condense on the cabinets. Presumably because the volume of air being vented is many times greater than when only the microwave is venting. The velocity and volume of the microwave vent air stream rivals a fart. There is no way that that provides enough airflow to move any substantial column of air in exterior vented ductwork. The problem is that new microwaves have done away with the front vent grille, and instead they direct the steamy, wafting air vertically, where it can destroy your cabinets. Posted below are photos of my installation, where the top vent is spaced forward of my cabinets with a very healthy dimension. Yet, my cabinets are being destroyed (notice the white residue on the frame and door after only three months of occasional usage.) Although, I do appreciate the sleek look of the microwave face (no nasty grille) as it destroys my kitchen.

I dont know any thing about specifics. But AJ had a few that said they were deeper as well.

This is not something I know much about, but I'm dealing with my range hood issues at the moment.

Wouldnt it be possible to mount the 16" deep microhood into an 18" deep recess so that the front is mounted as recommended, with a filler in the back between the rear of the microwave and the wall?

They definitely sell "trim" accessories online, although most of these are intended to fill a gap around the front of the appliance. I can't see a reason you couldn't mount the microwave to a 2" x 4" attached to your studs, then disguise the wood from below with a stainless steel trim kit. Google "otr microhood gap fillers." Good luck!

Yes, this is usually necessary even with things like the ikea cabinets that are 15" deep. Microhoods are designed for standard 11-12" cabinets.
