Comments (2)Personally, I wouldn't use either of them. Bound to be some additional sources with better offerings around somewhere. Otherwise, I'd by the basics in bulk and make my own. The Container Gardening forum Anney linked you to offers many recipes for good container mixes. Dave...See Moremold or mushrooms in my potting mix?
Comments (3)Plants live in close association with thousands of species of fungi and molds. Most are simply a part of the soil food web and help reduce organic matter to elemental forms (nutrients) the plant can absorb. Others form symbiotic (mutually beneficial) relationships with the plant, helping the plant to absorb water and nutrients. Still others are harmful pathogens and cause infections like the damping-off diseases or Botrytis, which are of particular concern to those starting cuttings. The mushrooms are simply the fruiting bodies of one species of fungus, and almost certainly harmless. It's unclear what the mold (another name for fungi with multi-cellular filaments or 'hyphae') might be. It's also difficult to determine why your cutting is struggling. It might be related to the mold issue, but it could also very well be related to some other cultural inadequacy. My guess, based on your description of the medium is that it is probably related to aeration (lack of) and water retention (too much), and the mold is also a symptom of that condition, but that is based solely on the odds, not on any sort of conclusion based on what information you've provided. Comments (5)I spend a lot of time at the Container Forum, just happened to wander over here! I recommend you post on the Container forum and talk to Al (Tapla) and JAG (Justaguy). The first mix will definitely be frowned on, the second mix is preferable if those are your only choices...with 50% fines it may retain water longer than optimal but that depends on your particular microclimate. Ideally you should need to water every day, means the mix is well drained with good gas exchange and fresh oxygen to the roots daily, think of container gardening as a cross between hydroponics and aeroponics...if you find yourself only needing to water every 2-3 days due to moisture retention then you won't have an optimal root environment and best results possible. Good luck. Tom...See MoreFafard Pro Potting Mix or Organic Potting Mix
Comments (9)I've used many different kinds of potting mixes and will NEVER use anything but Fafard again, though NOT the product on the retail shelves. Their (so called)professional mix is much like the rest of the stuff....barely so-so. But Fafard makes a line of mixes for growers and that's what I use. You may have to have your retailer special order it, but it will be totally worth it for container growing. I used these mediums back when I was a grower of nursery crops and that's how I became introduced to Fafard. My salesman was smart...I had been using ProMix and MetroMix....he left me 5 or 6 bags "to try" and I've never looked back, lol. That was over 20 years ago. I've attached a link so that you can look at the packaging and read the ingredients. I always go for the heavy weight mixes. I buy the Nursery Mix most of the time but keep some of the #3 on hand, too. You'll probably need to visit a locally owned garden center or nursery for a special order. If you're lucky, the nursery, if they do any growing at all, might even have some in stock that they will be willing to sell you. I have a large bail of ProMix in my garage that someone gave me years ago, and I haven't touched it. I'll use it in the gardens one of these days, but never in a container.
